Chapter 10

I made a list of all of the stops in London, both online and with premises, that sold wolfsbane.

The list was surprisingly short.

Then, I sent a text to Asher, informing the Council clerk of what we had found out and then, regrettably, I sent a text to my ex-boss to ask her if she knew where I could find out more information about Hound racing.

I left Reed and Cassidy to their daddy/daughter Sunday. I had been invited to join them on their weekly trip to the local cinema but had decided that it was too soon.

I hadn’t told Reed about Petra yet. What had happened. How I had failed her. I didn’t want to voice it, because that would mean that she was truly gone.

I was immortal. How many years would I have left, remembering my daughter and how the universe was cruel enough to steal her away.

My phone vibrated, and I noted with curious confusion that I had been added to a WhatsApp group by Dahlia. The group was labelled 'Hellions', but I did not recognise any of the display names or phone numbers.

Scrolling through the conversations, I noted a liberal use of Adventure Time and Ru Paul GIFs, with various questions being asked and answered. The group profile linked to a dead website.

The most recent question had been posed by the only name I recognised. Mi Reina, herself. It was two words.

“Hound races?”

I had no idea if Dahlia was passive-aggressively getting back at me for ignoring her, and blaming her for Petra, but it felt lazy. She might have been cold as ice, but Dahlia would peel the flesh from bone for those in her inner circle. Of which I had once been a part of.

The responses were sparse. Higher Demons tended not to know what the lower classes were doing and vice versa. Eventually, someone suggested one of the Folds—a dive named 'Sub-Terrain', located in Rye Way park where information had a price.

A place I would sooner pull teeth than visit.

As a lower Demon, with almost no magic, I did not do well in Cyclian-dominated spaces. The Rose clubs had some degree of protection because the Bouncers were almost always Hounds, and we tended to look out for one another. Deep down, I also knew that Vincent would lose his shit if anything happened to me in one of his clubs, regardless of whatever had happened between us.

Sub-terrain was a rancid pit, where people would give up any information for the right price. Do anything. Kill anyone. They also served local craft beers from Renfield's brewery. Their most popular beverage was called 'Alchemist's Ale', but had nothing to do with the ancient study of turning metal into gold.

Their wine was served warm and in smeared glasses. The bar was only ever spoken about in hushed and gossipy whispers.

I could barely protect myself if I went to Sub-Terrain. I did not want to go with a human that I cared about. Reed would become a weakness, at best, and a bargaining chip at worst.
