‘You were very quiet on the way back from dinner tonight. Did something happen between you and Martin I didn’t catch?’

‘No. He seems a nice chap. I was just thinking, that’s all.’

‘About what?’

I shrugged my shoulders.

‘Harry, sit down.’

I sank down on the edge of the bed next to her. She only called me Harry when she was cross or worried about me.

‘What is it?’ When I still didn’t answer, she continued, ‘I know this business with Jewel of Happiness and White Tiger is extremely distressing and I appreciate it must be taking its toll on you.’

I grinned. ‘I wasn’t thinking about them at all.’

‘Oh?’

‘I know this sounds heartless when they were both murdered so brutally, but I was thinking about me.’

‘But without anyone for you to give the key to, there’s no reason for anyone to follow you anymore.’ She patted my hand. ‘I know it’s a lot easier said than done but you need to push all of this to the back of your mind and concentrate on enjoying what we’ve got left of the holiday.’

I nodded then turned to look directly at her. ‘Because everything has been such a whirlwind since we arrived, I haven’t stopped once to say thank you and tell you how grateful I am not just for this holiday to this amazing place but everything you’ve done for me these last few months. Not just financially, though as we both know, I’d be on the streets without you, but for all the bolstering up when I hit rock bottom. I can’t pretend that I don’t need your support for the time being, but I promise when we get back home, things are going to change. I’m going to make something of myself and I’m going to pay you back every penny you’ve spent on me.’

‘Heavens above, sweetie. Where on earth has all this come from?’

I laughed. ‘Talking with Curtis earlier, I realised there’s lots of people like him, not just writers but other people setting up small businesses who need help not just building websites but with all the technical bibs and bobs, getting their heads round spreadsheets for accounts and orders and using social media for marketing and promotion.’

Her slight frown said it all.

‘No need to worry. I’m not getting carried away. I do realise that even now, it could all come to nothing, but Curtis is pretty enthusiastic. If it works out well, he said he has a few friends who might be interested in employing my services to help them with the technical side of things. If nothing else, I can make a start on giving you a decent rent.’

‘Let’s hope it all goes well.’ She smiled, but though she didn’t say it, I could see she was far from convinced.
