CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Chase
We spent the evening simply doing nothing. She showed me the garden and the work sheâd done. I offered to build her a couple of raised plant beds to make the backyard nicer. We sat outside, enjoying the fresh air, our hands linked, not saying a word, and enjoying every second of the silence. I liked the fact that I could be peaceful with Hannah. She didnât try to fill in the quiet with needless chatter or a thousand questions. The silence with her was tranquil.
When it got darker, we went inside, and I watched a baseball game on TV while she worked on knitting something. The sound of the needles clacking was surprisingly soothing. She told me she loved to knit and made a lot of blankets and booties she donated to the local hospital. âI can knit without looking once I know the pattern,â she explained. âEspecially simple blankets. Passes time in dispatch on quiet shifts, or I can watch a movie and knit at the same time.â
She was on one end of the sofa, her legs stretched out. I slid closer and propped her legs on my lap, wanting to touch her. I glanced at her, meeting her eyes, and she smiled at me but didnât say anything. After a while, the rhythm of the needles changed, then stopped, and I looked over, seeing she had fallen asleep. I watched her for a few moments, then stroked her calves. âHannah, baby. Wake up.â
Her eyes fluttered open.
âTime for bed.â
âOh,â she mumbled. âOkay.â She pushed off the sofa, bent down, and pressed a brief kiss to my mouth. âNight.â
She wandered down the hall, and I waited for a few moments, then turned off the TV, checked the locks, and got ready for bed. I went to the kitchen and filled my jug with ice water, pausing at Hannahâs door. I peeked in, seeing her sitting against her headboard.
âOkay, baby?â I asked.
âIâm fine.â
âOkay, just checking. Night.â
âNight.â
I left my door open, so I could hear her. When she fell asleep, she made a soft whistling sound every so often, and I knew I wouldnât be able to sleep unless I heard it. But instead, I heard her toss and turn, the sound of her frustration quiet but evident.
I sat up, calling to her. âIâm right here, Cinnamon. I've got a big bed, and Iâm waiting.â
I tried not to laugh as the sounds of her hurried footsteps met my ears. I lifted the comforter, and she dove under, snuggling against me.
âI was trying not to bother you,â she muttered.
I pressed a kiss to her head. âNot bothering. I like you here.â
âGood. This is an awesome bed.â
âIs it just the bed you like?â
She tilted up her head. âNo, the sexy man waiting for me is the best part.â
I lowered my head, capturing her mouth. Our lips moved together, and I deepened the kiss, our tongues tangling. Hannah whimpered, sliding her hands around my neck as I shifted, rising over her and pressing her down into the mattress.
