A half hour later, Zoe, Eric, and Melanie had traveled the same circular route numerous times without progressing. One time, she mentioned he’d finally asked her out on a date, but her fragile memories disintegrated, never reaching any mention of teenaged sex or a pregnancy.

Or a child.

With Melanie focused on her soap opera, Eric and Zoe retreated to a corner of the room. “I’m sorry, Miss Chambers. I know you’d hoped to learn about your brother, but as you can see, she’s not a great source of information most days.”

Zoe looked at the woman her mother loathed and wondered if maybe Kimberly should’ve stayed to witness the conversation. “As soon as I heard she had Alzheimer’s, I knew it was a longshot.” Zoe thought about the brick wall blocking her search. “My mother believed Melanie might’ve tracked down her son,” she mused out loud. Bringing her focus back to the manager, she asked, “What if she did more than that? What if she made contact?” The idea rekindled the spark of hope that this wasn’t a total wasted effort. “Has a man ever come to see her? He’d be in his early fifties.”

Eric stroked his chin. “I don’t believe so. You can ask at the front desk, but I’ve never seen a man of that age visiting her. In fact, other than her doctor and her daughters, she doesn’t get much company. That’s why I came to check on you ladies. When I heard someone had asked about Melanie, I was curious.”

Zoe thought of the scene he’d walked in on. “I assumed you wanted to break up the altercation my mother was creating.”

He smiled. “That too.”

She started to thank him for his time but stopped. “What about her daughters?”

“What about them?”

“If Melanie had tracked down her son, maybe they know about him.”

Eric crossed his arms. “Miss Chambers, that’s a big if. You admitted you’re here on a whim. There’s a very good chance Melanie preferred not to know anything about the child she gave up for adoption.”

“I realize that. But we’ve driven all this way. I can’t go home without exhausting the possibilities. Which, right now, is Melanie’s daughters. Could you give me an address or a phone number for them?”

“I’m sorry. We take the privacy of our residents and their families very seriously. The best I can do is take your number and pass it along to them. If they want to get in touch, it’ll be their choice.”

And if they didn’t, Zoe was back to square one.
