CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Rhys

I’m opening the door before she has a chance to knock. As soon as I set my eyes on her, my body reacts. My blood quickens, my heart beats faster, and my damn cock definitely takes notice. Of course, to give credit to my wayward appendage, she is wearing a light flowy dress that stops just above her knees and shows a hint of cleavage.

My immediate reaction is to yank her inside and plant a scorching kiss against her lips. But Cleo is wary, and the last thing I want to do is make her uncomfortable or push her away. I promised her last night that tonight is just about spending time with her, and I plan to hold that promise. She has a good reason for not wanting to form an emotional or physical attachment to a man, and yeah, it’s going to rip my heart out once she’s gone, but I’d rather have a short amount of time with her than none at all, even if it stays platonic. She’s already wormed her way into my heart, so I’m past the point of not being hurt.

“Hey,” I greet her with a smile. “You’re right on time.”

She holds up a covered dish. “I brought dessert. I wasn’t sure what you liked, but I figured I couldn’t go wrong with chocolate. It’s a homemade rocky road pie.”

I take the pie from her and gesture for her to come inside. “You had me at chocolate.”

She laughs.

I carry the pie to the kitchen and set it on the counter. I point to a stool at the bar. “Make yourself comfortable. Would you like something to drink? I’ve got water, OJ, and apple juice.”

“Orange juice is fine.” She sets her purse down on the bar and sits on the stool. “Something smells delicious. What are we having?”

“Lasagna,” I answer, turning to the stove and pulling out the dish of hot and gooey cheese, meat, and noodles.

“Is there anything I can do?”

I slide the pan of garlic bread into the oven, set the timer, and turn back to Cleo. I lean my elbows on the bar between us. “Nope. We’re just waiting for the bread to heat.”

“Perfect. I can’t wait.”

Leaning against the counter, I take a moment to look her over. Last night, when I dropped her off, she looked tired and worn down. I felt guilty for keeping her out so late when she obviously needs as much sleep as she can get. She looks better this evening, more refreshed.

“How are you feeling?” I ask, wanting to make sure my eyes aren’t deceiving me.

“I’m fine. I had a small tummy ache earlier this morning, but I’m good now.”

My worry spikes. “Are you sure? I can wrap this up and we can do dinner another night,” I suggest.

She leans over and wraps her fingers around mine. “I’m sure, Rhys. Unfortunately, upset stomachs are pretty common for me. I’ve learned how to cope. But even so, I promise I’m good now.”

I hate not being able to help her.
