Henry Morgan

Born in Wales in 1635, Henry Morgan became one of the most successful pirates to sail the high seas. In the 17th century Captain Morgan made his name plundering Spanish galleons and Cuban cities, the Caribbean, and Central America. While other pirates were hunted or executed, Morgan used his wealth and highborn relatives to escape capture and become Sir Henry Morgan, governor of Jamaica. In fact, he became so respectable that when he was called a pirate in print, he sued for defamation of character—and won.

Although he’s most famous for his exploits in the Caribbean, local legends say that Morgan liked to hang out in New Jersey, where he also had friends and relations. The Morgan section of Sayreville is allegedly named for his relatives that set up their homestead near that favorite pirate hangout, Raritan Bay. Sir Morgan liked to have a drink at the Old Spye Inn, which once stood at the foot of Old Spye Inn Road in Sayreville (it burned down in 1976). But that story is probably just wishful thinking: The inn was built circa 1703, and Henry Morgan died in 1688.
