Chapter Sixteen
I told myself that the kiss with Liam had meant nothing. Then why did it keep replaying in my mind? The warmth of his lips and his intoxicating scent were all I could think about. How had the kiss felt to him? Had he felt nothing since Martyrs were incapable of romance?
At that point, I had more pressing matters to think about than of my embarrassing mistake. The only thing I had on my agenda the next day was to get Papa to the doctor, no matter what it took. I hoped I could just outright ask him to go, but knowing his stubborn nature, he’d need more of a reason than his paranoid granddaughter wanted him to go.
Once I showered, I changed into a pair of cut off shorts and a T-shirt, and pulled my hair up into a messy bun. When I got to the kitchen, Papa had already finished his breakfast. Grams still slaved over the stove. I took a seat and stared at Papa as he read from the newspaper.
He folded the paper down and looked at me. “What?”
I curled my legs beneath me. “Are you feeling okay?”
Papa lifted one brow. “Yes. Why do you ask?”
“No reason.”
He gave me a dubious look and turned his attention back to his reading. I rested my elbows on the table and continued to stare. Papa glanced at me over the top of his paper, then lifted it higher, hiding his face.
After a couple minutes, he sighed and dropped the newspaper on the table. “What’s going on, Nina?”
I lifted my hands with a shrug. “Nothing.”
“Then why are you staring at me?”
“What would you say if I asked you to go to the doctor?”
Papa raised both brows. “I would say why?
“Because I think it’s time you had a check-up.” I pounded my fist on the table and crossed my arms.
Papa looked to Grams who was watching us with amusement. “Did you feed her something that was spoiled?” He looked back to me. “Did you eat something weird at the carnival last night?”
I shook my head. “I’m fine. It’s just that it’s important for men your age to have regular check-ups.”
He leaned back in his chair, folding his arms across his chest. “Is it now?”
“In fact, I read a statistic the other day that said men who don’t visit the doctor regularly are more at risk for heart disease, stroke, or cancer.” I said the last one with emphasis.
“Where did you read that?”
I lifted one shoulder. “I don’t remember.”
He grabbed his paper. “I’m fine. Stop worrying.”
I ripped the newspaper out of his hands.
“Nina!” Grams said, coming to the table.
My eyes widened as I stared at Papa. “Please go to the doctor. If you won’t go for you, then will you at least go for me?”
“Honey, what’s going on?” Grams asked.
“Please, Papa? After what happened with Grams, I want to make sure you’re okay too.” I fought off the tears stinging my eyes.
He looked at me as though I’d gone crazy. “Okay, sweet pea, I’ll go.
