The next day Grandpa came to visit again, he walked into the room, and my cousin Brandon was right behind him. It seemed odd, but many things have been strange over the last few weeks. Brandon shot me a goofy smile, and I felt slightly more at ease. We had always been close; he was four years older than me. He was a gentle soul; even as a teenager, he never stopped looking out for me. He once asked me if I liked girls and told me if I did, it was okay. He didn’t care. We didn’t hang out as much as we did when I first came here because he got a girlfriend, but I knew he was always on my side.

“What do you guys want?” I asked

“Rose told me you heard what Sally said when I was talking to her yesterday,” grandpa said.

“Yeah, we heard what she said,” I responded. “ But I already knew that was coming. She is disgusted by me now,” I said.

“Well, Sammie, I find her way of thinking disgusting, so don’t worry,” Brandon said.

“Me too,’ grandpa added as he took my hand.

“Don’t worry about my crazy ass mother cuz, she ain’t right in her damn head.”

“We want to pass something by you,” Grandpa said, then nodded at Brandon.

“Cara and I are moving to New Mexico. I found a job down there, and we are moving this weekend. We were talking last night, and she asked if you would like to come with us. Brandon said she found an amazing house with a spare room that could be yours.”

Grandpa asked me what I thought. The truth is I felt like a burden, shifted from one home to another. I also suspected that my aunt put my cousin up to letting me stay with him. I asked if I could talk to Brandon privately, and Grandpa excused himself from the room.

“Come on, Sammie, come with us and get a new start,” Brandon said.

“Are you sure Cara is okay with this, Brandon?” I asked.

“For sure, she is the one that suggested it,” he said with a smile.

“You aren’t just saying that I hope. I know your mother has pressured you to get me out of here. She has done the same with grandpa, but I don’t want to be a burden to anyone. I’m an adult now.”

“Just hush, Cara, and I want you there because we love you like a little sister. I don’t give a damn about what my mother wants, and she has crossed some lines that she can’t uncross with me.”

I asked Brandon if he could do one thing for me before I left Wisconsin. He was excited that I was going with them. I didn’t really understand why a couple of somewhat newlyweds would want an 18-year-old living with them. He asked what I needed him to do, and I told him I would like to see Sarah one more time. He told me he would see what he could do. I asked him to thank Cara for me.
