AFTER-DARK
GAMES
Whether out in the street, at a nearby park, or in your own backyard, running around outdoors after dark is a fun adventure.
Are your grownups concerned about safety? Remind them that they used to play these games, too. Maybe you could even invite them to join in the fun.
KICK THE CAN
Adventurers: 5+
You’ll need:
•An empty can (it’s helpful to have a spare can handy)
Try this:
1.Agree on the boundaries of the game’s playing area, and designate a “jail” space somewhere within this area. Designate one player as “It.” (If you have over 10 players, then designate two players as “It.”)
2.Just as the light is starting to fade, place a can in the middle of your playing area. The player who is “It” closes her eyes and counts aloud to 50. Everyone else scatters and hides. Note that you’re allowed to switch hiding places during the game, if you want.
3.If you’re “It,” begin searching for hidden players. Whenever you spot someone, yell their name and try to tag them. If you succeed in tagging them, they are sent to jail. Players in jail can’t speak—but they can signal to hiding players with their hands.
4.However, if the person who was spotted eludes “It” and kicks the can, then all players who were in jail are freed. It’s customary to shout, “Kick the can, everyone’s free!” Note that hiding players don’t have to wait to be spotted before they try to kick the can.
5.Whenever the can is kicked, “It” must close her eyes and count to 50 aloud while the freed players scatter and hide.
6.Once “It” has captured all players, the game ends.
