With her arm gripped in the vise of Howard’s fingers, Eva skipped alongside his long-legged gait as fast as her high heels would permit. Though it looked as if lunch at MacBride’s was out, she was so relieved that Howard had come to her rescue, she didn’t even mind.

Mercy! She couldn’t believe he’d actually slugged that man, but she was thrilled at the way he’d stood up for her. How many men could pop a guy in the mouth, then introduce himself, apologize and invite the other person to church services? she wondered in genuine amazement.

“Get in the car.”

“B-but I brought my car,” she stammered, looking up at him in perplexity.

“We’ll get it later.”

“Where are we going?”

“Home, so you can change out of that dress.”

“What’s wrong with this dress?” she asked, her thankfulness over his rescue fading beneath the irritation she felt by his constant harping on her choice of clothes.

“It’s too…revealing to be worn out in public.”

What remained of her earlier indebtedness evaporated like a pot of water simmering on the stove. Even though she’d felt a twinge of shame in the dress just moments ago, tears of humiliation and anger burned beneath her eyelids. Would Howard ever find favor with anything she did?

“If I can’t wear it in public, where will I wear it?” she demanded, louder than was necessary.

Noting the curious looks cast their way, Howard commanded, “Keep your voice down.” He opened the passenger door of his car and almost pushed her inside. Eva jerked the door from his grasp and slammed it shut. Howard got in on his side and started the engine.

“Thou shalt keep your voice down,” Eva said in a low, bitter parody. “Thou shalt not strike up any conversations with men. Thou shalt not laugh too loudly. Thou shalt study your Bible an hour a day.”

“That’s enough!” Howard said.

But Eva was just getting warmed up. “Don’t get too friendly. Don’t dress so gaudily. Don’t do anything that might be construed as fun. Good grief, Howard! I can’t even go to any dances, and I love to dance!”

Howard’s jaw tightened. Neither spoke during the remainder of the drive to the house. As soon as Howard pulled the car to a stop, Eva wrenched open the door and leaped out.

“Change your clothes, and then we’re going to have a talk.”

“You don’t talk. You lay down the law. The Ten Commandments according to Howard Blake. Well, I don’t mind telling you that all your ‘thou shalts’ and ‘thou shalt nots’ are about to drive me insane!”

She slammed the car door behind her in her haste to get away. Outrage carried her toward the front door. She was almost there when Howard grabbed her arm and whirled her around to face him. She jerked free, her breasts heaving with anger.

“You should have thought about all that before you agreed to marry me,” he said, the muscle in his jaw knotting.

“You’re right, I should have,” she agreed. “But I didn’t, and now we’re both stuck in this nightmare of a marriage.
