chapter 13

Cricket

“THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR your purchase,” Cricket said to her latest customer. “This pattern is beautiful,” she cooed, holding up one of the teacups that the woman had picked out for the recipient back home. The brunette woman’s eyes sparkled behind a pair of antique sunnies in a classic Jackie O style. She was dressed in a flowered sundress and espadrilles, and her hair was piled atop her head like an architectural model. She turned, offering Cricket a better view of her dainty upturned nose.

“Oh, thanks. It’s just perfect. I’m getting it for my daughter’s birthday. She is away at college; I thought it would be nice if we could video chat and have tea together in matching cups.”

“What a lovely thought. I am sure she will appreciate it.” Cricket finished carefully wrapping the last porcelain cup-and-saucer set in pink tissue paper and put the set in a white paper bag that had their large Baubles and Whatnots black script printed across the front. She closed her eyes and sent a blessing to this woman’s precious daughter.

Cricket coughed, her eyes watering. The chills had come again, and she shook so hard that she stumbled into the wall of vintage books behind the counter. She had been pushing through work, but it was taking its toll on her body and spirit. Her concentration kept slipping, and she was unable to form a single coherent thought or decision before moving onto the next one. She felt like she may fall over at any moment.

“Are you all right, hon?” The woman backed up in alarm.

The coughs kept coming. She grabbed a tissue from behind the counter. “Fine . . . Thank you . . . allergies,” she managed between the fits. Allergies were easier to explain than death by pirate curse. The cough startled her. She had never coughed before. Her fae blood protected her from most illness.

The bells tinkled in a cheerful melody as the woman walked out the door. The warmth of the day created a soft haze that filled the streets and gave everything a lovely glow. Cricket watched as the woman’s brunette hair blended into the crowd, her figure becoming just another in the bustling street full of people.

Simultaneously her phone vibrated on the counter, bringing her awareness back.

Zadie: Got the treasure, come get it and me.

Babs: I know where we need to take it. Cricket I’m on my way to get you.

Cricket: Thanks guys

It was all coming together. They were really making progress in the fight against this curse. She knew she could count on her sisters’ help. She could hold on. She had to.

Just then the doorbells jingled. In walked James, the FedEx guy. James’s chest stretched his navy polo in all the right places. Clearly, he lifted weights on top of his regular lifting during his nine-to-five. Tikaboo ran out from under the counter. James promptly pulled a dog treat out of a pouch on his belt, like he did every day. Tikaboo ran
