Chapter Fourteen

We were hit by a wave of loud, pounding disco music the moment the storage door cracked open.

It rolled up with a flourish to reveal a dancing Joe Evil.

His lab coat was alive with swirling psychedelic colors that pulsated to the beat.

As if that wasn’t enough, he also had club lighting and multiple disco balls.

When the song hit its crescendo, he spun around to face us. All of his clothes lit up at once. It was pretty glorious.

But then he saw us and startled.

He clapped his hands and the music stopped.

“Uh, hello. Who are-?”

He looked us over.

“Uh, Dark Matter? Did you bring superheroes to my secret lair?”

“Technically, just one,” I said.

“And who let you in?”

“That was me,” Kirby said while crawling down from the garage door.

“Why?” Joe Evil asked.

“I thought it was the pizza guy.”

“Did they do the pizza guy secret knock?”

“No.”

“Well, then?”

“We get so little company.” Kirby reached the floor.

Elijah leaned over to whisper to me. “Why are we here?”

“Right, right,” I said. “Guys, we need your help.”

Joe Evil and Kirby stopped their squabbling to look at me.

“We need Dr. Kirby.” I motioned to Scarlet Mist.

“At your service,” Kirby said, scuttling into action. “Lay her on the table.”

Elijah looked a bit skeptical.

“Do it,” I said.

He laid her on the same table where Kirby had saved Joe Evil.

While Elijah watched Kirby do his thing, Joe Evil motioned for me to join him a few feet away.

“Who is that guy and why does there appear to be a smaller, redder version of Grey Smoke in my secret lair?”

“He’s Elijah, and she’s hurt. I didn’t know where else to go,” I said. “This may be the only safe place left in the entire city. But maybe not for much longer.”

He looked at me like I was nuts.

“What are you talking about?”

“The short version,” I said. “Is that Cyber Sorceress and Commander Apex are after us.”

That got him interested.

“What did you do?”

“We broke out of Sterling Tower.”

Now he was impressed.

“And I take it you stole that?” He pointed to the energy container.

“Actually, yeah.” I said.

“Way to go,” he said. “But… how sure are you that you weren’t followed?”

“Not sure at all.”

He threw up his hands.

“Fantastic!”

“Don’t worry about that,” I said. “There are much bigger things to be worried about right now.”

He tensed up, and his eyes got big.

“Dinosaurs?”

“Um, no.”

“Oh, good,” Joe Evil said. “I’m allergic.”

“I’m not kidding around here,” I said. “You know, maybe you’d take this a little more seriously if you weren’t wearing your funky party coat.”

“Oh, I can change it.”

He fiddled with a control panel just on the inside of his lab coat. It turned back to black.

“Wow,” I said.

“It is made of Light Weave technology,” he said. “It can do a bunch of cool stuff. Check it out.”

A Pac-Man grid appeared all over his coat.

“And of course, it has internet.”

A cat video replaced the video game.

“Oh, and invisi-coat.”

His coat appeared to disappear, taking his arms with it. He spun around. From the back, he appeared to just be a floating head and some feet.
