STEP 4: DANCE

WHEN YOU THINK of dance, you might imagine a jitterbug, a salsa, a samba, a fox-trot, a waltz, a tango, or maybe even belly dancing, square dancing, or two-stepping. All of these dances are wonderful. But when we talk about dance in the context of the Ultra-Longevity program, we mean something broader: any combination of rhythm and movement.

Rhythmic movement, or moving to a particular rhythm, is the essence of any dance. So whenever you are moving in rhythm, whether or not music is playing, you can consider yourself to be dancing.

This means there’s a whole new world of dance out there: the dance of walking, jogging, biking, swimming, hiking, and even golf—after all, good golfers know that their best swings are made when they are following a rhythm. (Many golf pros recommend counting out a beat, starting on the backswing and continuing through the follow-through. Keeping in rhythm maintains the timing of the swing, shot after shot, so you develop consistency.)

Even tennis is a dance. Anyone who’s watched a top tennis match knows the game’s rhythm, punctuated by the whoosh, pop, whoosh, pop sounds of the volleys. Even the crowd of spectators develop a rhythm, turning their heads and eyes left, then right, then left, then right—the stadium performing a simple dance in unison.
