GIANT STONE SPHERES

One common tactic of the ancient astronaut theorists is to seize on any mysterious or seemingly mysterious archaeological find, particularly one involving massive structures, assert that their creation was beyond the capabilities of anyone without advanced technology, and then, having created a mystery, plug in ancient aliens or the human recipients of their advanced technology—often the denizens of Atlantis—as the creators of the artifacts. Although many of what they’ve asserted to be mysteries aren’t so mysterious after all, the giant stone spheres of Costa Rica (Fig. 8.8), some of them more than two meters (six feet) in diameter, do remain an enigma, at least in terms of what their purpose might have been. Using this rather minor point as a thin entering wedge, David Hatcher Childress, affecting a quasi–Indiana Jones style of dress, in a feature he wrote and directed titled Ancient Technology in Central America, asserts that the native inhabitants of Costa Rica couldn’t have made these perfect stone spheres, that whoever fashioned them used power tools, and that the spheres were probably deposited in Costa Rica by a giant tidal wave, no doubt part of the cataclysm that destroyed Atlantis (or Mu, since the stones are found closer to the Pacific coast of Costa Rica than to the Atlantic), the original home of the spheres.

Although Childress doesn’t directly assert that the stone spheres were made by space aliens, he does assert that they were made by the same people who built Tiwanaco and who thus were either extraterrestrial colonists or their human protégés. As he did when speaking of that city in the Andes in an Ancient Aliens episode, Childress asserts that the stone spheres could only have been the product of high technology. He states unequivocally, “In fact, the machining of these perfectly spherical stone balls is something that is so difficult, it could only really be done with power tools.”
