Chapter Twenty-Two
Dakota and I wrapped up our conversation. Knowing she wasnât being honest and getting her to admit it were two different things. It also didnât prove sheâd been involved in any way. Iâd have to come back to the subject of our John Doe later and see if I could get her to open up about him.
For now, I returned to Izâs place with Franklin, and Dakota went back to wherever it was she was spending her time.
Hopefully job hunting so she could pay me back.
I found Chava curled up on the sofa watching poker on TV.
âHow did it go?â she asked, muting the sound.
âIâm not sure,â I said, plopping down next to her.
âWhat did you two talk about?â
I explained Dakotaâs stalker situation.
âHuh,â was all Chava said when I was done.
âHuh, what?â
âItâs just the story she told you. Itâs the perfect example of stalker behavior.â
âSo?â
âSo, that might mean she made it up.â
âOr maybe thatâs just how stalkers behave.â
My cell started to vibrate in my pocket. Iâd set it to silent when I met with Dakota.
This could be interesting.
âHey, Parker. You have some news for me?â I hoped Chance had found out who was skulking around my house last night.
âI do,â he said, âbut I need you to come back to the hospital.â
âWhatâs going on at the hospital?â
âJust get over here now,â he said, adding an uncharacteristic âpleaseâ before hanging up.
âWhatâs up?â Chava asked as I stuck my phone into the back pocket of my jeans.
âIâm not sure.â
I explained the short conversation.
âIâm coming with you,â Chava said. I started to argue, but she reminded me we only had one key.
âWe both know Iâll go crazy here by myself all day.â
We both also knew she was exaggerating, but I had to admit it felt comforting to have Chava along for the ride.
We walked into the ER to find the Medical ExaminerâAaron Sonâand Chance Parker waiting for us. Aaron looked vaguely concerned; Chance just looked speculative.
âWhatâs this about?â I asked.
âI need to ask you a few questions,â Aaron said. âCome on down to my office.â
âThatâs a switch,â I said. âIâm used to him asking all the questions.â I gestured toward the detective.
âThis is serious, Eddie,â Chance said, pinning me with his eyes. Chance had a way of scanning his surroundings while he was talking to you. As if something dangerous might leap out of the woodwork and his vigilance was the only thing stopping it. But right now he was zeroed in on me.
âAll right,â I said, âletâs go.â
The four of us went down the hall to the elevator, continuing on to the morgue in the basement. Once we were settled, Aaron pulled out a clipboard.
âYou said you didnât touch the body you found,â Aaron said.
âThatâs correct. It was obvious heâd been dead a long time.â
âAnd you were wearing gloves when you entered the room?â Aaron asked. âIs that correct?â
âYes. There shouldnât be a problem with transfer,â I said, referencing when a person leaves residue during a crime scene investigation. Transfer residue can be found on any surface, including human bodies.
