Chapter XXII

Alfonso greeted his family with a wide smile and big bear hugs. His face filled with joy as he held Luis above his head. “This is truly a wonderful day.”

Dionisio stood at the corner of the room and wiped tears from his eyes.

Raiken grabbed him by the arm. “You did well, today. I’m proud of you. It took courage to stand up for what is right. The Inquisition was borne of ignorance and fear. Its time will end, but until then you must save the innocents.”

Dionisio nodded. “I followed my heart today.”

“You did, but for too long you did what the Church or the government or your parents told you to do. Carve your own path and do what is right. Tell Anna that you love her. Forget about who your parents think you should marry. If you love each other, that is all that matters. Her social status is irrelevant. Your parents lived their lives. Now it’s your turn to live yours.”

“I will.” Dionisio kissed his hand. “Thank you for helping me see things the way they are. I feel as if my vision was clouded before meeting you.”

Dionisio bid Raiken farewell and left.

Raiken went back into their room at the inn, where Alfonso was packing their belongings. “We must leave. Surely the authorities will be looking for us.”

Raiken nodded. “Alfonso, you have proven what I already knew. You are a man now. I leave you the responsibility of taking care of your mother and Annabella when you return to Portugal.”

Alfonso frowned. “What … what are talking about, Father?”

“I’m staying behind. I have ancient business to deal with. I have lived a long and full life, and I have taught you well. That is all a parent can do.”

“If we leave now, we’ll all get back to Portugal safely.” Alfonso’s eyes pleaded with him.

“I can’t explain what I’m doing. Trust me when I tell you I am doing what must be done.”

“Please, Father, don’t talk like this.” Giacinta hugged him, tears streaming down her cheeks. “You’re speaking as if you are already dead.”

Raiken chuckled. “Don’t worry about me. I have danced with death many times, and I have always returned. You have been given a second opportunity at life. Take advantage of it and live every moment to its fullest.”

Manuel hugged Raiken. “I can never thank you enough. Please let me stay with you. I can help you do whatever it is you plan to do.”

Raiken shook his head. “I haven’t come this far only to see you die. Honor me by taking care of your family.”

Manuel began to cry. “I’m so sorry. If I only listened to you, none of this would have happened.”

“If you learn from your mistakes, nothing is lost.” Raiken picked up Luis. “Ah, Luis. My only regret is that I won’t have the chance to see you grow up.” He turned to his daughter. “Please tell him when he gets older that his grandfather loved him very much. I will miss you.” Raiken kissed his grandson, who had a big smile on his face.
