CHAPTER

ELEVEN

After Nevin left, Earnan’s first instinct was to feel victorious because he’d managed to drive the other dragon away, but that feeling was soon replaced by the realization that Nevin leaving did not mean a victory for him. It was a defeat for them all because they could not figure out how to be together peacefully for longer than a few minutes at a time.

The truth was that Nevin left because he couldn’t stand to be around Earnan for a moment longer without lashing out. Earnan had felt it, the tension between them just before the fire prince had vacated the bed. It had made the fine hairs on the backs of his arms stand up, waiting for an explosion that never came.

Next to him, Ben shifted, gazing at the door through which the fire prince had left.

Earnan wished he knew what to say to his mate to get back to that happy place they’d been in mere moments ago.

Ben gathered himself, though, more quickly than Earnan had expected. “Are you feeling better?” he asked, turning to study Earnan, his eyes lingering on the bandages.

For the first time since waking up, Earnan checked in with himself. “I’m good,” he concluded. “I think all my bones are healed.” He moved a bit to test this. A sense of relief settled over his mind when there wasn’t any pain to be detected. “Thank the stars for magic.”

Ben smiled, but there was something about that smile that told Earnan his mate wasn’t entirely happy.

I used to wish there wasn’t any magic anywhere, and now I’m here and everything’s different.” He paused. “Sometimes it doesn’t feel like it’s my life anymore. Like my family’s still in the mountains struggling to get by and I’m dating two princes at the same time.”

“If there’s anything I can do to help your family…”

Ben shook his head. “They’re getting supplies and all and things are better now, I guess. Nevin and Curren have been really good about it, but they’re all still scared to live anywhere else or to attract too much attention… This world’s pretty terrifying when you’re the only one who doesn’t have super powers.”

Earnan ran his fingers through his mate’s hair in a gentle, caring gesture. “You’re far from powerless, treasure. You’ve got two dragons wrapped around your fingers. Dragons who would do anything for you.”

“Anything…” Ben shook his head. “If that were true…” He looked toward the door again.

Earnan had to concede the point. “Give it time. It isn’t easy for us to figure out how to navigate this.”

Ben’s gaze darted back to him. “But you want to?”

Earnan swallowed the first couple of words he wanted to say in reply because they wouldn’t have been truthful. Ben deserved the truth, though, and Earnan was past the point of denying his every thought around the fire prince. “It’s
