CHAPTER 12

“You sure did it this time, Kalli,” Doc LaLone said.

He was in his sixties with thick white hair and kind, light blue eyes. He still wore a white lab coat with a stethoscope around his neck, old school style, but I didn’t trust any other doctor. I’d never seen anyone else since my parents adopted me at birth. He knew all about my quirks and was careful to only touch me when he had to. Unlike most people, I actually liked the smell of antiseptic because it reassured me things were clean.

Nik grunted. “I knew this was going to happen, but she never listens.”

Nik sat in a padded chair in the corner of the country-blue painted room with pictures of Doc’s children and grandchildren scattered around the counter. The walls were filled with drawings and pictures sent in from all of his patients over the years. There were a couple other doctors around town, but Doc LaLone was by far the favorite.

“Is it bad? Am I dying?” I twisted my hands in my lap, my clothes still damp from the downpour. What the heck was happening to me?

“You’ll live, Ms. Kalliope Mary Ballas, but you have one heck of a concussion.” He gave me the same stern look I’d seen many times growing up under his medical care. “I want you to take it easy for the next six weeks. No arguments. You can’t afford to be stubborn this time. Your brain isn’t anything to mess around with.”

“Okay, I promise.” That earned me another grunt from Detective Serious Pants Stevens. I ignored him and lowered my voice. “By the way, Doc, did the rest of my brain seem okay? Like you didn’t see anything else unusual, did you?” I held my breath.

“From anyone else, I might think that’s a strange question.” He chuckled. “Let me ease your fears. You’re perfectly healthy, and your brain looks just fine. So please take better care of it, okay?”

“Okay, good.” I breathed out a sigh of relief. Maybe it was just my imagination running away with me again. “I will, I promise.”

“Now tell me what really happened.” Doc studied me, then his gaze settled on Nik’s. “No fall, no matter how hard, could have given her a lump like that. Someone hit her over the head, didn’t they?”

“It’s taken care of, Doc. You have my word.”

Doc nodded. “How’s your mother doing? Is she sleeping okay? If she needs a refill on those sedatives, just let me know.”

“Ma swears she never took them. She thinks someone drugged her, and I have to say I’m starting to think that might be true. Especially after the bottle of Ouzo was found laced with the same sedative.”

“Hmmm. She’s not the only one in town I’ve prescribed those same sedatives to.” Doc seemed to realize he’d spoken out loud. “Now, you know, with HIPAA laws I can’t tell you who. Just know there’s more of those pills around town.”

“Thanks, Doc.” Nik stood and helped me off the exam table.
