Chapter 8

Something wasn’t right. Actually, nothing was right. Why had Samantha fought with Travis? Did he know about her affair? If he’d known about everything, could that have been her motive? I couldn’t figure out the end goal behind Samantha’s moves or Travis’s. What did Samantha have planned that was worth killing her for?

I hadn’t told Grant about the buyer who was supposed to be there that afternoon. Had that been Samantha’s plan? Was the buyer even real or was he a ploy to get some kind of reaction from Travis?

If the buyer was real, Samantha would have records of the appointment – an email or a date book. I needed to see Samantha’s stuff, but I couldn’t see anything with Travis blocking the office. He hadn’t left all day – even when he’d been told his wife was murdered.

Back at my station by Robyn, I texted Grant and scanned the crowd for Travis, Rikki, or Mork. My message was succinct. “Meet me by the office.”

I turned to Robyn and leaned in, whispering, “I need to get Rikki and Travis away from the office. I think Samantha had something going down on the side. I need to get more information. If I send them out to you, can you distract them long enough for me to look through things?”

Robyn jerked her head to the side and scanned my face. She nodded, a slow smile showing her teeth. “You bet your sweet bubkiss! And your aunts left a little bit ago. They said you better be in bed with Grant or they’re coming back for him.” She lifted her hands to chest level and scrunched her face. “Their words, not mine. It’s all disgusting, if you ask me. Like you and Grant would ever…” She shuddered like the idea was more horrific than anything she’d ever considered. She searched my face, waiting for my reaction.

“Ew. Um, okay. On that note.” I pretended to be grossed out when I really was just largely disappointed. I wanted to call my aunts and thank them for stealing my thunder. How was I ever going to ask Robyn when I already knew she was disgusted by the whole thing?

The crowd pressed toward the signing, leaving little room to maneuver. I pushed my way through, breathless when I reached the outer office. I really just wanted to grab the taunting maple bars and cuddle up on the couch with my head in Grant’s lap. Would he mind if I daydreamed for a minute?

Knocking on the interior office door with the blinds drawn, I cracked the door open and peered inside at Travis. “I’m so sorry to bother you. We have a problem. Can you come out and speak with Robyn? It’s pretty serious and Rikki can’t handle it by herself.”

Travis jerked his head up and down, obviously irritated. His eyes were bloodshot and I hoped it was from learning his wife was dead and not because he was doing some kind of recreational drug. Knowing my luck, he’d be doing exactly that and I would never get the answers I had promised Grannie.
