As we exited the vault through the passageway, appearing in the bottom of the trench, I chewed on my next words. I didn’t want to speak them, because the moment they were out, we would be on the move again, back into the danger, back into the hunt.

A chance to revel in our accomplishment, of finally returning the portraits in our possession back to their rightful spot in the vault, securing away the nightmares contained within, would have done my spirit some good—but we didn’t have that kind of luxury, that kind of time to spend on nourishing our battered souls.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs perhaps had never been more accurate. We had to go.

Everyone filed off the dais as the others came through, until we stood in a group staring up at the ledge of the trench. Amari went up first.

I turned to Sasmita, who had her arm wrapped around Sachin, holding him to her side. She was never going to let him go again.

“Where are the other two mages?” I asked.

I hadn’t seen her espial map in a while. Something told me she had permanently marked their locations in her brain, given they didn’t seem too inclined to roam about from where they had been released. Why would they? Their empire could spread out with a thought, given enough time.

That fact was frightening enough on its own. The last two dark witches and mages had been free, unchecked, for over two weeks. In dark mage time, that provided more than enough opportunity to destroy and rebuild, to create legions and armies. They could have done nearly anything that came to their mind, and their minds were often dark, narcissistic places.

“One was in France, but she was darting around a bit,” Sasmita said. “The other was pretty stationary in southern Sweden.”

“Really?” I sighed, wearier than I had been before her reply. “This was not how I had envisioned my first tour of Europe.”

Randall stepped forward, joining us. “So we’re back at it, are we?”

I tipped my head skyward, thankful for the clear, starless night. Stars around here were deadly.

“Do we have a choice?” I asked, but it was rhetorical.

We did, of course. We could sit and accept our fate with some kind of feigned dignity and pragmatism.

“We should stop for jackets, then,” Randall said, always the reasonable one. “We might as well take the guy who isn’t sightseeing.”

I opened my mouth to counter, but he crossed his arms over his chest.

“Save it, Saf. We get you’re all big and powerful, but up until you actually find the mage, you need us.” His scowl deepened. “Sitting around twiddling my thumbs waiting for you to make it home is bullshit. Not doing it again.”

There would be no arguing Randall, and I didn’t want to. I wanted him to come along, but that didn’t negate the real danger hunting dark witches and mages possessed.

“Up until I find the witch or mage,” I said. “Then you fall back.”

“Unless you need someone to hold up
