They had to contend with another three more hours of boredom until the sister of the ward came to fetch them.

“Inspector, Mrs Lockett is awake now.”

Sara shot out of her chair. “Is she up to speaking with us?”

“I’ve asked her. She’s desperate to see you. I must warn you to take things easy with her.”

“You have my word.”

They followed the sister back through the swing doors and into the private room close to the entrance. Jeanette was sitting up in bed, her hair messy, looking decidedly groggy. Which didn’t bode well in Sara’s eyes.

“Hello, Jeanette, how are you feeling?”

Jeanette held out her two arms which Sara could tell were nothing more than stumps. “How do you think? They couldn’t save my fingers or my hand.” Her voice was fraught with emotion—to be expected.

Sara approached the left side of the bed and laid her hand on the woman’s shoulder. “I’m sorry, I’m sure the surgeons did their best in the circumstances.”

“It wasn’t good enough. How am I going to cope without hands and without my husband to help me? They told me Bob had died…” A sob cut her off.

“I’m sorry for your loss and for the pain and suffering this person caused you.”

“Persons, plural, there were two of them. The gutless cowards wore masks. I’ll never be able to identify the bastards who have dramatically changed my life.”

“Two, are you sure?”

Jeanette faced her and glared. “Of course I’m sure. I might have just had surgery, but there’s nothing wrong with my memory. My anger has seen to that. Why? Why did these people burst into our home and feel the need to attack us in such a brutal way?”

“We’ve yet to establish that, Jeanette. Did either of your attackers give you any hint as to who they might be, or perhaps let anything slip, like a name or why they chose your house?”

“No, I would have told you if they had.”

“What time did they arrive? Can you remember?”

“Yes, I was on my way up to bed at ten. The bell rang, and Bob answered the door. Why did he do that? At that time of night? If only he’d ignored it, maybe he’d still be here today and I wouldn’t be facing a life of disability.” Fresh tears sprang to her eyes.

“Please, try not to upset yourself.”

“Upset? Upset? I’m bloody livid. Worse than that, angry beyond words that someone walked in off the street and tortured us like that. We’re good people. Never done anything to hurt anyone else in this world and yet…”

“I know. I have to tell you that we’re treating this investigation as part of our ongoing case, the murder of Alistair Daly.”

“I kind of figured as much for myself. What I can’t get my head around is why. Alistair was a decent chap. Did right by the staff and his family. Always treated me and Bob well over the years. Why would anyone choose to torture us? It’s not as if they tried to get any information out of us.
