Chapter Six

Rhonda crept out onto the front porch and studied the dark rain with her gun at the ready. As she did, Max took off through the front door like a bolt of lightning and charged off into the darkness like a raging army tank.

“Let’s go!” Rhonda stormed off after Max, nearly slipping on the front porch steps and tumbling down into a mud puddle. Zach caught her arm at the last second. “Whew…thanks,” Rhonda gasped as the cold rain struck her face. She threw her eyes around and listened for Max. “He’s over there! Come on!” Rhonda burst off toward the side of the farmhouse, turned the corner, and spotted a wet barn standing like a shadowy silhouette in the distance. Max was at the barn barking up a storm. “Let’s go!”

Zach followed Rhonda through the rain, watching with impressed eyes as the woman sneaked forward on brave, confident legs. Rhonda was a very courageous woman, always putting others before herself. This thought made Zach wonder about his own life. Was he willing to let go of his pain and put someone else first for a change?

“There,” he whispered over the howling wind and pointed to a shadowy dog barking at the closed barn door.

Rhonda nodded her head and eased to Max. Max threw his eyes up at Rhonda and began pawing at the barn door. “Easy, boy,” Rhonda whispered in a careful voice. “Zach, I’m going to—”

“What’s going on out here?” Abigail’s worried voice appeared through the rain along with a very bright flashlight. She ran up to Rhonda and Zach on worried legs, ignoring the cold rain. “What are you doing?”

“Max chased someone into the barn,” Rhonda explained in a quick voice.

“Oh pooh,” Abigail fussed. “The only thing Max chased into the barn is a stray cat…look for yourself.” Abigail lowered the flashlight beam down onto the lower part of the right barn wall. “See that hole in the wood…stray cat had kittens. I put food out for her every night.” Abigail shook her head. “I’m late tonight with her supper, that’s all.”

Rhonda looked at Zach. Zach shrugged his shoulders. “We better check just in case,” she told Abigail. “Zach…open the barn door.” Zach hesitated and then did as Rhonda asked. He grabbed a rusted door handle and pulled the heavy barn door open. The smell of wet hay struck his nose, reminding him of Billy’s farm. “Cover my back,” Rhonda said, taking Abigail’s flashlight and easing into the barn. It took her a whole ten seconds to locate a stray momma cat huddled up with her kittens in a pile of damp hay. “Kittens,” Rhonda sighed and lowered her gun.

Zach felt relief wash through him. “We better check the rest of the barn just in case.”

“Sure.” Rhonda handed Zach the flashlight and searched the barn. All she came up with was hay, a tractor, a barn owl, and work tools. “All clear,” she told Zach and walked to the front of the barn where Abigail was waiting with Max.
