Chapter Six

Rita spotted Mr. Moods lying down on a freezing rock floor. She quickly hurried over to the man, knelt down, and examined his face through the flames of a bright fire. Mr. Moods lay silent and still. An ugly gash sat on his forehead covered with dry blood.

“He’s alive,” a sneering Jason told Rita in a sour voice as he plopped down on a wooden log in front of the fire. The sound of the crackling flames echoed down a long, dark, creepy tunnel. “You chose the wrong time to take a vacation.”

“You killed Mr. Maples, didn’t you?” Rita demanded, forcing her voice to sound tough. She turned and faced Jason, spotted a hideous monster instead, and braced herself for an ugly battle of words.

Jason placed the dangerous rifle he was holding down against the log and began warming his gloved hands against the fire. “That old man killed Howard,” he informed Rita with a sick grin. “It’s amazing what a man will do to keep a secret.”

“A secret?” Rita asked and cringed when her voice floated down the dark tunnel. Her mind ran back to Nevada and placed her in the old mining tunnel that once held another monster. What was it about caves and killers?

“A secret.” Jason grinned, raising his deadly eyes and looking at Rita. “You might as well get comfortable because this cave is going to be your final grave.”

Rita knew without a shadow of doubt that Jason intended to kill her. But why wait? she wondered. Why didn’t the hideous creature just simply shoot her dead already?

“What do you want?” she asked. She looked down as the handcuffs binding her wrists began to eat into her skin and wondered how she could possibly escape.

Jason lowered his eyes and glared into the fire. “Closure,” he hissed.

“Closure?”

“Yes,” Jason whispered and grew silent for a few minutes. “I’m going to take away everything that belongs to them—everything.”

Rita glanced down at Mr. Moods. “You’re talking about Mr. and Mrs. Moods, aren’t you?”

“Gee, ya think?” Jason said. “It’s all been planned. The players are in place.” A slimy grin slipped across his face. “Some players will die. Others,” he said and nodded at Mr. Moods, “will suffer until they die.”

“What did that man ever do to you?” Rita demanded. “What did Mrs. Moods ever do to you?” Then, somehow, Rita knew. How? Maybe it was by looking deep into Jason’s stony face and spotting a piece of Mr. Moods. Maybe it was the killer’s voice…or eyes…or hair…who knows? What Rita did know was that the heavy fog covering her mind burned off just enough to shine light onto the true identity of Jason.

“Mr. and Mrs. Moods’ son,” she whispered.

“I guess you’re not such a stupid cop after all,” Jason told Rita, looking impressed despite himself. He stopped warming his hands, folded his arms, and studied Rita with careful eyes. “Yeah, that old man is my dad—my biological dad, at least.”

Rita stood very still. In the far distance she saw the entrance to the cave; however, the only way to access the entry point was to bypass Jason Moods.
