Rita heard Rhonda's cell phone ring. “Grab the phone, Billy,” she said speeding past a bright green semi-truck as the windshield wipers clacking back and forth, fighting heavy rain off like a brave warrior.

Billy leaned into the backseat, spotted Rhonda's cell phone, picked it up, and checked the incoming call number. “Don't recognize the number.”

“Hand me the phone, please,” Rita begged. Billy handed it to Rita. “Hello?” Rita answered the call, forcing her voice to sound calm even though she was a wreck.

“This may sound like an old movie line,” Ron said, “but if you ever want to see your sister alive again you'll do exactly what I tell you.”

“And this may sound like an old movie line...but if you hurt my sister I'm going to kill you!” Rita snapped.

Ron gritted his teeth. He didn't like being threatened. “Watch your tongue or else,” he warned.

Rhonda stuck)her ear to the little metal door and listened to Ron talk to her sister. So far the truck hadn't moved, which meant Ron was still parked in the Cracker Barrel parking lot. “Don't play his game, sis...be smart,” Rhonda whispered her thoughts.

“You are to take Billy to Gold Peak,” Ron ordered Rita, “and wait for me. When you arrive you are to go to the old gold mine, but don't go inside. If you go inside I'll kill your sister, is that clear?”

Rita slowed the SUV down, eased behind the same green semi-truck she had raced past and tried to think. “Okay...we won't go into the gold mine,” she told Ron.

“I will have people watching you,” Ron lied. A professional killer understood how to outsmart every cop in the country and how to manipulate his victims. More importantly, how to play the game of chess in the dark. And Ron Bufford—or so he believed—was the smartest chess player to ever be born. “Do not enter the cave.”

“I said we wouldn't, okay,” Rita spat.

Ron gritted his teeth again. “Lose your tongue, lady,” he warned for a second time.

Rita looked at Billy. Billy's face was angry, upset, and consumed with guilt. “We're on our way to Nevada right now.”

“Very good,” Ron said, forcing his own temper down a notch. “I'll be close behind. If you do as I say your sister will die with you. And if you fail to obey she will die alone. Is that clear?”

“I want to speak to Rhonda,” Rita demanded.

Ron lifted his left hand and slid the metal door open. “Say something,” he ordered Rhonda.

“I'm okay, sis,” Rhonda called out. “Don't play by the rules and--”

Ron slammed the metal door closed. “Happy?” he asked.

Rita debated on whether to turn around and go back to the small Kansas town she had stormed away from or to keep moving. “I have no other choice,” she whispered in a miserable voice, keeping the SUV at an even speed. “Yes, I'm satisfied,” she told Ron and then added: “I'm satisfied Mr. Bufford. ”Rita needed to get a reaction out of the killer who was holding
