"Help me with these books, please!" I screamed at the front door. The journals Glinda gave me were enchanted. There was no other way to keep that many logs. Glinda was over four thousand years old, and McCool was even older than her.

The records I was given spanned from right before the two left Ireland all the way until two hundred years after founding our town. That's hundreds of years of personal journals, so what Finn did was bound each memoir to cover a fifty-year range. When the reader finished a year, they went back to page one, said the right word combination, and started onto the next year. Even with that, I was left with a thick, tall stack of books I couldn't see past.

Glinda's father was clever. He'd made them, so the text was mortal friendly until the reader cast the right spell. Once the enchantment was removed, then the real words would appear on the page. When Glinda was explaining all this to me, I called the system a low-tech magical e-reader. She gave me intense side-eye.

"Help would be awesome!" I bellowed while trying to balance my bags, slipping off my shoulders while holding the ancient journals. "I can't see in front of my face..."

Dillon came running down from upstairs then stopped when she saw me at the door. "Woah! You weren't kidding."

"Nope, not kidding. Also—losing my grip," I insisted. "Take, take, take!"

Dillon reached her hand to take half of the stack, and when she did, the weight shifted so dramatically that I released an audible breath. "Oh—oof! Thank you, Dillon."

Moving to the couch, I set the rest of the books down on the coffee table while letting my bags fall where they may. Looking around, I realized I didn't see Shawna.

"Did she go out?" I asked.

"Shawna?" she asked while scrunching her face. "I don't think so. She was here when I got breakfast this morning."

"That's weird," I replied. "Maybe Shawna's in the shower?"

"I don't hear water?" She was right. There was no water running.

Usually, I wasn't a mother hen, but with the magical world in turmoil, being close to me put a target on Shawna's back. "I'm going to see if she's taking a nap in my room."

"Okay. Mind if I set up the TV down here?" Dillon asked. “I wanted to binge a few episodes of Glendale Girls. I'm feeling nostalgic."

"Ooo!" Nothing like a mother-daughter sarcastic comedy to lift the spirits. "Nice choice."

Seeing my face light up, Dillon asked, "Want to join?"

"Eh... I have to start going through these journals; otherwise, I'd be right there. Maybe Shawna? I'll see is she wants to join," I said casually. "I'll be right back."

Heading down the hallway to my bedroom, I passed the office. At first, I thought nothing of the cracked door. Then I remembered I had locked it when Shawna first got here. Walking back to face the office, I was filled with silent horror. "Shit..."

Scenario after scenario rushed behind my eyes until all that was left was white noise.
