Chapter 14
Imogen was running late. She jogged down the road to the bar where sheâd arranged to meet Jed, neatly stepping over puddles from the recent downpour and tried to banish the dayâs stresses. She had spent hours with a homesick first year student, who was considering jacking in her course in and going back home where her boyfriend was waiting. Several hours later, she had at least persuaded her to stay for the end of the month and arrange for the boyfriend to visit, but it had taken much longer than she had anticipated. Then, sheâd had a couple of students worrying that they had taken the wrong course and had to advise them on their options.
Jed was already at âThe Nagâs Headâ looking rather gorgeous in a well cut grey suit, white shirt and a smart gold watch flashing at his wrist. Expensive, Imogen decided. She noticed that his shirt also looked luxurious, the sort with proper cuffs which were fastened together by horse head cufflinks. Not for the first time she wondered about his background and decided he was seriously posh. He kissed her cheeks, leaving her blushing and went off to the bar to buy her a drink. She was bursting to tell him her findings and was about to when he announced.
âWell, I have good news about Eddie, Bernadette tells me his latest brain scan shows the swelling is reducing. Itâs too early for him to come out of his coma just yet, but a definite improvement. Then Bernadette told me she has bought some cat food for his cat! I never even knew he had one, so I went there last night to feed the thing and found the place had been broken into and turned over. And the intruder was still in the house and hit me over the head. Look.â Jed turned his head to show her where there were cuts and abrasions on the side of his head. âI rang the police who came but they think it was an opportunist who knew Eddie was still in hospital. But Iâm sure someone was searching for something very particular. I wonder what?â
Imogenâs brain was in overdrive. âDid you get a good look at the person?â
Jed shook his head. âNo, they came down the stairs from the shadows. I didnât see anything really. It all happened so quickly. Still nothing major was stolen, so it was no ordinary burglary, they definitely were looking for something specific.â
âI think I have a good idea what.â She fished into her bag and handed the photo over to Jed. âI presume that the man is Eddie, but who is she?â
Jed looked at her open mouthed. âWhere did you find this?â
âIt was in the bank statements and thereâs something more. Having studied his accounts in more depth, it is clear that over the past six months Eddie has definitely had another source of income. Heâs been able to save about twelve grand or so and has barely spent any of his wages which suggests that he has been living on his bribes.
