"Let me get this straight. That castle master is a total badass." Phac frowned.
"Thatâs not the terminology Bones used, but kind of." Rain nodded, arms crossed. They were once again gathered in a circle, with Boninâs blood candle burning in the middle. It stank, but even the smell of burnt blood was better than what smelly horrors the dungeon naturally held.
And it was already burnt halfway. They had to hurry.
"I donât think we can trust him," said Feraya. "Heâs a devil. Devils are supposed to trick others. Maybe they cannot lie, but theyâre experts at twisting the truth."
"And letâs be serious," intervened Baruzak, the half-dwarf leader. He spoke with authority and was naturally short, with a long, brown beard and a set of heavy armor that had seen better days. Thankfully for everyone, the devils kept the captivesâ equipment in a little storage within the dungeon, making it easy to retrieve. "Even if the souls do escape, he and that castle master are strong and have wings. In the empty desert, theyâll be recaptured immediately."
"So, we are all in agreement that Boninâs plan sucks," spoke Treea. This was a green-eyed, brown-haired woman, leader of the half-elves along with Makaran. Unlike his elegant yet strict authority, however, Treea seemed kind and caring, someone that people would rally around by themselves. Phac had no doubt that she was the carrot to Makaranâs stick, even though the relation between the two was still fuzzy in his mind.
"Yes." Rain nodded. "As I see it, the only way for the souls to actually escape is for the devils to be killed, or at least embroiled in combat for long enough. Unfortunately, we canât stand up to a hundred of them by ourselves, even if we have five Masters on our side."
Rain was not a Master but had the strength, or at least the utility, of one. Baruzak and Treea were both Masters, a warrior and a healer respectively. The final ones were Phacâwho had the strength of a Master despite not being oneâand Feraya. Unfortunately, this meant that the only front-line fighters they had were Phac and Baruzak. Far, far from enough.
The souls themselves were twenty-seven in number, but most were fairly weak. Even including the four turtle-men monks, who apparently were great painters as well, all the souls put together would barely be able to stand up to ten Goatee Devils.
While waiting for Rain and Feraya to return, Phac had learned about soul bodies and how they worked.
For one, they were unkillable, though they felt pain as normal. Any action that would kill them caused the soul to disperse in a small, intangible cloud, slowly coalescing together over the course of two hours. Once it coalesced, they would wake up, fully healed. In other words, even a soulâs death was not enough to free them from Hell, as they would just keep coming back.
Another interesting fact was that souls retained their personalities but lost all their memories, including Classes and Skills. They couldnât even remember their names.
