Chapter 11

Tolldruck stood at the entrance to the underworld and witnessed the destruction caused by Arto and the others. He wasn’t surprised that the sentry towers had been defeated so easily; he was surprised, however, that the attack had taken place at all. Why come here? Why go to the Mystics? What was in the dragon world that would help them? All questions he and the Master could not answer.

This turn of events made him uneasy. Situations that had seemed straightforward in the past had turned in an instant and led to defeat. Jacob was a dangerous enemy and one he had grown to respect through the years. His decision to give up immortality had been foolish, but he remained strong and wise.

Tolldruck raced down the walkway into the darkness. He arrived at the cauldron and looked at the wall behind it. He had never been back there without the Master. He didn't know the secret words she used to open this doorway. In their rush to find out what Arto was up to they had forgotten this important detail. He knew roughly where the hidden door was. If he couldn't open the door with words, he could always open it with strength.

Charlotte thought she heard loud bangs coming from above them. At first, George and Elder Thomson thought she had been mistaken, but then they heard it as well. A bang, then a pause, then another bang.

‘What is it?’ George asked.

‘It sounds like something is trying to get in.’ Charlotte replied.

‘In here?’ George asked.

‘Where else would they be trying to go?’ Charlotte said, looking at the ceiling above them.

‘Who would know we are here?’ Elder Thomson asked.

‘I don’t know, but I don’t like it.’ Charlotte replied.

Just then the shadows in the far side of the room began to change and form shapes. Within seconds ten Shadow Walkers were floating silently in front of them.

George instinctively stood in front of Charlotte, raising his hands, showing the sunshine shooter to the Shadow Walkers. Elder Thomson reached into his pack and took out a sunshine bomb and without hesitation threw it into the Shadow Walkers. The explosion and reaction were intense as Walkers melted in front of them. No sooner were those ten dead when another ten took their place. The Shadow Walkers made no attempt to attack or advance, they just floated silently, watching and waiting.

‘What are they waiting for?’ George asked.

‘I’ve no idea. Maybe the liquid sunshine scared them.’ Answered Elder Thomson.

‘If that were true, they would have remained hidden. They are scared of the Mystics.' Charlotte answered.

‘How do you know?’ George asked.

‘They don’t usually come down here, not without staying hidden. They only come down here if they are sent down.’ Charlotte replied.

‘What sent them?’ Elder Thomson asked.

His question was greeted by silence from George and Charlotte, but a series of loud bangs came from above them, then a crashing sound like a wall collapsing. A roar from above and the pair looked at Elder Thomson. The Elder looked terrified.
