I followed the progress of Tilly’s top hat as she moved through the crowd. Most guests that she greeted wore tuxes and gowns with fancy face masks, but she also passed a king and queen, a Raggedy Ann and Andy, even a pair of bookends. And, Officer Mick Walker leaning against the wall at the edge of it all, observing the action.

Tilly had managed to get him into a mask sprouting pink feathers. I chuckled and wished I’d seen how Tilly got that on his face. I followed his gaze, surprised to see that he was watching Willow. She held an untouched drink in her hand. Her vacant, far-away expression and downturned mouth made me curious about what was going through her mind.

“Sunny,” Tilly whispered when she finally reached my side. “There’s a problem.”

“What? Mick threatened to arrest you for forcing him to wear that girly mask?” I asked to delay hearing bad news.

“Not quite, but he did a lot of grumbling and complaining, which I enjoyed immensely. I had to scold him like he was a preteen before he put it on. Softens him up. Makes him look a little more bearable in my opinion.”

I had to laugh. “I totally agree, but tell me, what’s really going on?”

“Listen, Sunny,” she said under her breath, “the real problem? That scarecrow? It is Joel and he wants to talk to Willow.”

I leaned in close to hear her because I didn’t want anyone else listening into this news.

Her hat started to slip but she caught it in time and held it in place while she filled me in on Joel’s story. “He saw her go into his father’s office and heard him greet her. Now, he wants to know what she was doing in there. When he went back about twenty minutes later… boom… his father was dead. Slumped over his desk.”

I had to take a breath. That was exactly what I didn’t want to hear. Joel needed to stay away from everyone. “He just remembered that detail now? If she did kill his father, does he really think she’ll admit it?”

My head whipped around as if on cue; I wanted to see if Willow was close enough to hear us, but she was nowhere in sight, so I turned my attention back to Tilly.

“Joel said he’d know if she was lying,” she said. Tilly threw up her hands as if to say, what was I supposed to do with that?

“He said he didn’t think anything of it at first. It took on new meaning when you told him that Willow said that now they could get their relationship back on track. Someone murdered Reggie in that twenty-minute gap, and Joel is desperate to find out if it was Willow.”

That’s what I’d like to know, too. Where was she? I swiveled my head, but only saw costumed revelers. “Great,” I said. “It wasn’t just me jumping to that conclusion.” I looked back where I’d seen Willow last. Gone. I stood on my tippy toes and scanned the room, searching for blonde hair.
