Chapter Nine

Grant had completely forgotten he’d promised to take the judges out to dinner that evening. They had done a splendid job, and it was important for him to honor their commitment to the cause.

He’d looked around for Angela to make his apologies, but she was nowhere in sight. It wasn’t as though she’d agreed to have dinner with him yet, but it would have been good to let her know he couldn’t make it anyway. Grant figured she left right after the photos were taken. Knowing her, she was back in her room making sure her sample was perfect. When it came to Angela’s dedication and commitment to succeed, there was no question of her passion or her work ethic.

It was for the best they didn’t have dinner, at least until the competition was over. And then, she’d be gone anyway. There was no sense in letting the friendship between them grow stronger, or the attraction for that matter. Because for the first time in a long time, Grant would have considered going on an official date—with Angela.

Getting caught up in discussions, it was a good two hours later by the time he made his way back to the Crestfield Inn. “Good evening, Kyle. Any messages?”

Three happy contestants returned, two of them already having left to go celebrate. Most of the others have already packed and left or made arrangements to head home.”

“It’s always toughest on those that don’t make it. The judges had difficult decisions to make. My understanding is that the quality of creativity was quite high.” Grant ran a hand through his hair and then massaged the muscles of his neck briefly, stretching from side to side. It had been a long day, and he still had dinner to get through.

“So now what?” Kyle asked. “I mean, like what’s the process for the three still in the running?”

“They turn in a sample of their own personally created fragrance to the judges by eight a.m. tomorrow. They had months to perfect the perfume to be used for this part of the contest if they made it to the finals. The samples will be delivered to the client, and he’ll have twenty-four hours to decide a winner and will then let me know. At that point, I will make the official announcement.”

“So, what’s with the big secrecy of the client? Is he someone famous?”

Grant smiled. “I don’t know. Perhaps he didn’t want the publicity or speculation that would go along with an event this size. It was his request for total confidentiality, so we’ve honored it.”

“I think it’s kind of cool. Mysterious sort of.” Kyle laughed. “It sure has people around town trying to guess who it might be.”

Grant shrugged. Luckily, they wouldn’t guess him, which is another reason he thought it important to make an appearance. “If you say so. Is
