2. Tuia

Whakarongo ake ki te tangi a te mātui

tui, tui tui tuia.

On the Tuia Stage in Whitianga there were rock groups,

poets and a choir. The tangata whenua, Ngāti Hei,

graced the stage with whaikōrero and waiata tawhito.

It was humbling to listen to their kaumātua

who spoke of the importance of harmony

between us, Māori and Pākehā, represented

by this celebration of waka and the Endeavour.

3. Waka Tipa

I moved between the tents, across the road to the harbour

where three waka moored. I came aboard the waka hourua, Haunui,

led by Hoturoa Barclay-Kerr, the great star navigator and rangatira.

I spoke with some of his crew, including the captain

of Fa’afaite, the Tahitian waka tipa, which surfed huge waves

at 22 knots to arrive in time for the celebrations

from Tahiti. I then walked down the pier to their waka

and doubled my exposure to these taonga in person.
