CHAPTER 7

RONAN

Leaving Damari behind had been harder than I thought it would be. I hadn't realized how much of an influential part of my life he'd become until he wasn't around. When I was at the NightShade offices, I could text him and he would respond with pictures or voice notes that made getting through a shift easier. And when I wasn’t there, I was with him as often as possible.

Being on a mission, I had to focus. I knew he was in good hands. I trusted my friends implicitly to keep him safe for me. Both Cohen and Godric knew how important he was to me. They'd seen it in my actions and my determination in making sure Damari's enemies were taken out.

“We're closing in on the target,” Orion said, his voice echoing in the small vehicle we’d acquired for this trip. Since there were only two targets, we kept it to two members of the team going to the site. Of course Memphis was watching everything from base, and we had guys stashed nearby, but overall, there was no need to bring in extra bodies.

This wasn’t a public place like Clarence hid out in. It was secluded, which worked in our favor.

Of course, in the last mission, the target had already been dead by the time we got there. This time around, I hoped we could at least get some answers before we took Hilt out of the equation.

“Park here,” Memphis said through our comms. The technology was advanced, and it allowed us to connect in a way that only US military members had been doing before. It's amazing what Tank could acquire when he needed something specific.

Orion parked the car off to the side of the dirt road where it wouldn’t be easily seen. We climbed out and looked around. We were definitely in the middle of nowhere.

You could see the path we’d driven down, though most of it had been left to ruin with overgrown foliage all over. It was the perfect way to get to our target without taking the single entry access to the house.

“You're going to head northeast for half a mile. From there, the house should be visible.”

“We still clear for two targets?” I asked him.

“Absolutely. I'd tell you if otherwise,” he said sarcastically.

I rolled my eyes at Orion, who chuckled under his breath. We both knew Memphis could be an asshole when he wanted to. Or when he felt like we were questioning his abilities.

Orion and I carefully moved through the woods in the direction Memphis had said. He would go around to one angle to make sure we came at the guard from both sides. We needed to take him out as quietly and efficiently as possible as to not alert Hilt.

I had no doubt the man would be armed. If a shootout was heard, the method of surprise would be lost. We didn't want him to catch us off guard and one of us get a stray bullet.

Once we reached the outer area of the forest, we split up.
