Five minutes later, Jan and Andrew appeared at the back door. Steve unlocked it and welcomed them into the kitchen. By this time, Lorne had finished reading the book, and everyone, including the kids, were in stiches.

“My, aren’t you all having fun?” Jan said, a puzzled expression on her ageing face.

“Grandma, Granddad, we didn’t know you were coming tonight,” Haydon shouted and ran into Jan’s arms, swiftly followed by Rory joining them in a group hug.

“It’s an unexpected pleasure,” Jan replied, her gaze flicking between Steve, Sally and Lorne. “What’s going on?” she eventually asked.

“Why don’t you see to the boys, Steve, and we’ll have a chat with Jan and Andrew?” Sally suggested.

He seemed a tad uncomfortable when Jan’s intimidating gaze dropped on him again. He nodded and smiled then marched the kids out of the room and upstairs.

“Who are you?” Jan demanded as soon as the door was closed behind him.

“Hi, sorry, I didn’t want to make the introductions while the children were in the room. I’m DI Sally Parker, and this is DS Lorne Warner.”

“The police. Why… no, it can’t be… do you have news about our daughter?” Her voice faltered several times.

Sally gestured to the sofa. “Why don’t you take a seat?”

Jan and her husband moved in front of the sofa and lowered themselves in slow motion while staring at Sally.

“You’ve found her, haven’t you?” Jan murmured.

“We think so. There are dozens of tests that need to be carried out yet, before a formal identification can be announced, but Steve has confirmed that certain items which were found with the remains we discovered, belonged to Gail.”

Jan immediately broke down and cried. Her husband flung an arm around her shoulders and pulled her into his chest.

“My God, we’d lost all hope of… where?” Andrew asked.

“In Cavendish Lake. You’re probably aware that the lake has been dry for a few days due to the drought. Well, what appears to be your daughter’s remains were found near what would be the centre of the lake.”

Jan’s head rose, and she stared at Sally open-mouthed. Finally, she asked, “Her remains? How were they found?”

Sally sighed. “In a hessian sack.”

Jan sobbed and curled into her husband once more. It took several long moments for her to settle down and ask the next question. “What makes you think it’s her? After all this time, how can you be so sure?”

“There were certain items found in the sack. I have photos of them if you’d like to take a look?” Sally removed her phone and stepped towards the sofa.

At first Jan turned away, but then, after a moment’s pause, she regarded the images Sally showed her.

“Yes, that’s her belt buckle, I’d know it anywhere. Her brother gave it to her when they were both in their teens. It might even have been when she was eighteen.”

“We believe there aren’t many in circulation, can you confirm that?”

“Yes, I can confirm that it was specially commissioned for Gail.” She sobbed again.

“Do you know how she died?” Andrew asked, his voice catching in his throat.
