Chapter 21

Ronan’s ranch spread out on either side as I rode my bike down his driveway. I’d swung by Arial’s to drop off my things and sent her a text saying I was going to stay with her for a few days and I’d explain when I saw her. I still managed to get to Ronan’s place early. He and Killian were already sitting on his porch in rocking chairs, waiting for me, when I came to a stop in front of the house.

“That is quite a motorcycle,” Killian said as he blew smoke from his pipe. “1986?”

“How did you know?”

“I know machines,” he answered cryptically. “Did you build it yourself?”

“Re-built it myself. The only way I can afford it. There’s this great little garage near where I live that lets me work on it, use their tools and the lift. They only make me pay if I need help.”

Killian’s smile told me he liked my answer.

“You spoke with my protector? The one who changed me?”

“I did. He cannot give much information. His orders are to keep you safe and to tell you nothing.”

“His orders?” I climbed the steps and leaned on the railing across from Killian.

“You think your protector is the one who made the decision to change you?”

“I guess I hadn’t considered it. So someone gave him the order and he carried it out. He can’t tell me anything, but couldn’t he tell you and you can tell me?”

“It does not work that way. If the knowledge comes from him, even circuitously, he can be forsworn.”

“Who is this guy? Maybe I can talk to him myself.”

“I cannot tell you. That, too, would make him forsworn.”

“But he has all the answers I need.”

“Indeed he does. And you will receive none from him. If he tells you, he will be destroyed. And then he can no longer protect you.”

I set my teeth together. I wanted to argue. The answers were all right there. I just needed to find the guy who changed me. But the tone Killian used warned me this was not an argument I would win against him. I remembered what Evander said being forsworn meant, magic ripped from you, not to be reborn. That would be a poor response to someone who had spent my life protecting me from the shadows, even though I never asked him to.

“So what do I do now?”

“The answers you seek must come from the person who ordered you changed.”

“And that person is in the Sidhe.”

“Indeed.”

“So I’ll have to go there.”

“Yes,” Killian said.

“What about answers regarding Meriel’s murder?”

“Your protector believes Meriel’s death is connected to you, but cannot explain how. Thus, those answers are most likely also in the Sidhe.”

“Can’t explain. As in, he isn’t able to because of his orders or because he doesn’t know?”

Killian smiled but didn’t say anything.

I nodded. “Isn’t allowed to explain. Fine.” I took a deep breath, steeling myself. “So I go to the Sidhe.” I looked away from the dwarf, my eyes finding the rowan tree in the front yard.
