Chapter Eleven

I pushed aside the flap of my tent, trying not to let my dejection show. There might not be anyone in my tent to see my face, but if I let it show, then I was going to end up letting it take over me, something I wasn't willing to do if I could help it.

"Finally. It took you long enough."

I snapped my head up to find Amun lounging on the cot I'd brought with me to sleep on. I trailed my gaze up and down him, taking in the strong athletic frame, and the handsome face attached to it. If I was a lesser woman, I might have gone weak at the knees. But I wasn't. I was a goddess, and I wasn't about to forget that for a pretty face.

He must have seen some of my thoughts written in my expression, as his own grew more serious, and he sat up. The posture change went a long way to making him seem less like he was expecting something.

"I called for you hours ago," I pointed out. It wasn't that he'd taken time to answer that annoyed me, more that he seemed to be pretending that he hadn't.

"I'm sorry, I wasn't in a position I could leave."

I raised an eyebrow. "You realise how bad that sounds, right?"

I entered the tent properly, then fixed it so no one would be able to come in without my permission. It wasn't foolproof, especially because the tent was still only made of fabric, but the magic was enough to give me some warning.

Not that it would be helpful. Especially when there was nowhere for Amun to actually hide. He could try and fit under the cot, but it wouldn't stop him from being seen.

"Seth called a meeting about what you're all doing here."

I froze in my tracks. "Does he know?"

Amun shrugged. "He assumes you're here to smoke him out, or something like that. He went on about it for three hours, but as far as I could tell, it was just a screen for not wanting to admit that he has no idea what you're doing."

Huh, that was unexpected. Seth hadn't told Amun about Horus then. What else was he keeping from one of his strongest supporters? It seemed like an odd choice from where I was standing, but that was up to Seth at the end of the day. At least it was something I could use to my advantage.

"We're here to get Horus out of Seth's custody."

I watched Amun closely to gauge his reaction. It would tell me a lot about how much he did actually know, and how much he was faking.

Shock, horror, and disgust all warred for control of his expression. That was something, at least. He really hadn't known all of what was going on at the compound. A small part of me was disappointed in him for following so blindly, but relief was the predominant emotion flooding through me. He hadn't done anything to capture Horus. That was a good thing.
