The surgery went well. Shaheerah finished school and went on to begin her ministry in Detroit.

When I talked to Shaheerah about what it means to trust God with your very life, what she told me was that it’s dependent on your understanding of God. Shaheerah has learned that what you believe about God is a function of what you know and understand about who and what God is in your life. You cannot learn it from a book, nor can you rely on your intellect. Understanding God unfolds through your soul.

Shaheerah herself once faced a horrific health challenge, one that shook everything she knew, believed, and understood. She now calls it a healing opportunity, which she believes is the purpose of all disease. When several doctors told her that what she was facing was incurable, that they had never seen anyone recover from this particular disease, Shaheerah said she refused to accept that as her reality. After all of her years of study and the time she had spent teaching others about the omnipotence and omnipresence of God, she says she could not receive the finality of human judgment as the reality she would live. She believed and understood that God is everywhere, at all times, present and active. This led her to ask: “What could it be that God could not cure?” Her search for that answer led to her healing and complete recovery.

Shaheerah admits that the pain and suffering, which she experienced 24/7 for more than a year, took her to a place where she no longer knew what would happen. She says she got to a point where she actually did not know if she would survive, and that led her to the point where she didn’t care if she did or not: she just wanted the pain to end. Shaheerah says there were moments when the pain was so intense that she thought about taking her own life. What stopped her was the embarrassment. She thought about her family, those who loved her, and those whom she had taught about God for so many years. She thought how embarrassing it would be for her to do what she had been taught only God can do: give life and reclaim life. She didn’t want that for herself, for those she would leave behind, or for God.

That recognition, she believes, was her moment of surrender. Once she surrendered her wondering, and even her belief, that she would survive, living angels began to show up in her life. These angels brought her hope in the form of information and the motivation she needed to keep trusting and believing in God. Shaheerah says she was on a support call with people from all over the world who were experiencing the same disease when her hope was restored. One woman on the call said that just managing the disease for the rest of her life was unacceptable. She needed to be totally healed. Shaheerah found strength and hope in the woman’s conviction of total healing as a possibility.
