“When the hell did this happen!?” asked Hephaestus as the dragon tried to climb back to its feet.

“I just realized myself. We’ve killed so much shyte we’ve leveled up like crazy!”

“Why weren’t we notified?”

“Because the system ain’t fully implemented here, Hephy! But enough talk, let’s kill this beastie and be done with it!”

Hephaestus turned towards the dragon as it regained its footing. “Well,” God said, “You’ve got some edge after all, don’t you? And I don’t necessarily mean your weapons – that edge is obvious enough. The thing you need to understand is that,” its rumbling laughter came from its chest, “I am God.” The dragon’s wings flared to its sides, propelling the mass towards the sky, far away from the island.

“Altara,” said Hephaestus, “What’s the thing doing?”

“I don’t know,” she replied as she stood next to him, “I can’t see crap.” As she finished talking, a dot of light, bright as the sun, became visible where the dragon would have been. “Damn it,” Altara said weakly.

“What, what is it?”

“It’s going to launch something our way.”

“Can you shield us!?” exclaimed the smith.

“I don’t know that I can. I’m new to usin’ magic.”

So this is it, then. He held the woman close as he saw the dot moving towards them. It grew larger the closer it came, and he saw it for what it was – a tremendous ball of virulent fire, slowly making its way towards its targets, towards Hephaestus and Altara.

Hephaestus saw no means to stop it. Not that it would matter, as something of that magnitude would likely destroy the island they were on, anyways. “Altara,” wheezed Hephaestus, “I’m sorry.”

“Whatever the ‘ell for?”

“Because I got you into this mess. Because I’m stubborn, and didn’t just sit down and accept a world without being able to craft things,” he sighed. “That’s stupid – I would give my ability to craft, a thousand times over, so that you were safe.”

“Well,” said the woman, “not everythin’s lost yet. Remember what Ishmael said?”

“Hm?”

“Watch,” she set herself loose from Hephaestus’ embrace, cupped her hands, and yelled “YOUR FRIEND ISHMAEL, JEAN SENDS HIS REGARDS!”

The mass of fire disappeared, as if it had never been there. In its stead, a black shape, ribbons and pieces trailing, flapping behind it as it fell, sped towards the ground in front of them. It landed violently in a cloud of dust, making Altara and Hephaestus cough and gag. When the dust cleared, a thin man, dressed in a frock coat stepped out of the cloud. “You met Jean?” he said in a soft voice, “How’s the man doing? Is he alright?”

Altara and Hephaestus looked at each other. Altara spoke. “He told us how to find you,” she paused. “Mister Vazquez.”

“Vazquez… yes, yes that’s it,” he said, “that’s my name.
