Chapter 8
A half hour later the party was in full swing. We welcomed close to thirty dogs and cats from around the neighborhood. It was a good turnout but lower than I’d expected. A lot of the neighborhood pets simply couldn’t leave their homes on Christmas Eve without being missed. Out of the four members of Duke’s dog patrol, only Duke was able to attend as his owner had to work that night.
Another factor keeping potential party goers away was the weather. As animals arrived all they could talk about was how the temperature had dropped, how fast the snow had started to come down or how windy it was getting. The general consensus was that the party had better be worth it because everyone was going to have to fight their way through four foot high snow banks to get back to their homes.
A lot of the guests had brought treats with them. Molasses’ bag had been full of Shrimp Scampi that her owners had brought back from a four star restaurant. Others brought catnip, bones or even dead mice. Since I was providing food for the party, most of the treats that the guests brought were used as stakes in the party games.
We had stairway races in which Solomon the Siamese, widely known as the fastest cat in the neighborhood, took on all challengers. There was a game of ‘pin the nose on the human’ going on in the living room and some cats were in the basement seeing who could spit the furthest.
We also had music. In the dining room, two tabby brothers, Teddy and Leo sang a sweet rendition of “Everybody Wants to Be a Cat” just to annoy the dogs in attendance. After they were done Thor got in front of the Christmas tree and belted out “The Cat Came Back” in his deep loud baritone. He really seemed to relish the parts of the song where the cat was being tortured and he downplayed the parts where the cat comes back. This amused the dogs and drew hisses from the cats. It was all in the spirit of fun and nobody’s fur got ruffled. Literally.
With that many cats and dogs of all sizes and dispositions under one roof, I had fully expected that there would be insults, arguments and maybe even a little violence. There was none of that on this night. Everyone was being weirdly nice to one another. Even Percy, the dog who had chased me the other night, came up to Chuck, Molasses and me and actually apologized. Although we could hear the wind and snow beating against the outside of the house, there was plenty of warmth on the inside.
About an hour after the party started Yoshi came trotting down the stairs. He had been in the master bedroom taking a regularly scheduled nap. Anybody who wasn’t Yoshi might have thought that it was bad form to take a nap while you’re hosting a party, especially if you suspect that one of the attendees is trying to murder another one of the attendees.
