Chapter Fourteen

Charlotte

I LEANED MY HEAD ON Tommy’s shoulder as he flicked through the book that he had picked up for himself down at the store. It was just some crime thriller, but he had told me that he was just glad to have the time to read anything these days. I was looking forward to reading it over his shoulder, given that I was having a hard time putting any space between us at all right now.

I couldn’t believe how well things had been going lately. Couldn’t believe how good I felt being around him like this. And couldn’t believe that, even though we were on the run and fearing for our lives, that I was so at peace with myself and with the man that I had chosen to be with.

I loved him. There was no doubt in my mind about that, even if I hadn’t had the opportunity to say it out loud yet. I loved him and I was crazy about him and I wanted to spend all my time with him because I needed to know every little detail about him. How he liked his coffee, how he took his eggs, when he preferred to wake up, if he was a night owl or a day bird. I wanted to discover every little thing about him, every little thing that I could, so I could really know him the way that I wanted him to know me.

The last few days had been downright blissful. Things had been running smoothly here – it was easier to keep watch on this place given that it could only be accessed from that helipad, so we didn’t have to spend so much time on guard. I was pretty sure that even Jerry was starting to relax around here too, and I was just glad that I got to spend some real time with Tommy.

I had been worried that the call I had made to my sister would land us in some sort of trouble, but it looked as though I had gotten away with it unharmed. I still felt a little guilty for not having told anyone about it, but hey – no harm, no foul, right? Better that I just kept it under wraps.

“How does it look?” I asked him as he flipped through the first few pages.

“Pretty trashy, but I just want to read,” he replied, turning his head so that he could plant a kiss on my nose. He was so sweet with me that sometimes it made my heart feel fuzzy, and I would get even more angry when I thought about all the shit that Matt was trying to spin about him back in the city.

If only I had actually told him that things were over between us then and there. Maybe things would have been different – I mean, maybe Matt would have been able to accept it. It wasn’t like he actually liked me or wanted anything to do with me; he just wanted the foot in the door that being married to me would give him with my father.
