While Mark poked the bear by interviewing the officersâ families, Will crashed in my new hotel room. It had taken him a while to settle, but once he did, I made myself scarce. The hotel gym kept me occupied for most of the morning.
Toweling off, I checked the distance on the treadmill. I hadnât been running for distance. Iâd run as fast as I could for as long as I could. But I started out too fast. My hands had started shaking half a mile in, but I pushed past it. My thighs quivered at the one mile mark, but I kept going. When my knees threatened to buckle, I slowed until my heart calmed down enough for me to step off.
After a good stretch, I returned to the room and showered. Since Will hadnât woken up yet, I went shopping, picked up two new phones, and texted Martin and Mark the new number. I called Cross, told him what happened with the last burner, and was reassured the police department wouldnât be able to track the number or get a list of calls Iâd made or received. But Cross promised the security team would remain vigilant.
âHowâs everything at the office?â I asked.
âGarnetâs becoming increasingly volatile,â he said.
âWhat does Miranda think?â
âShe hasnât said anything to me, but I can tell sheâs freaked out. I upped her security detail. Mr. Nepper is checking into Garnet to see if we missed anything. In the meantime, Iâm keeping my eyes on Miranda.â
âI bet you are.â
Cross ignored the comment. âNepperâs been tailing Garnet. She spends a great deal of time at one particular vitamin shop.â
âDo you think itâs a front for something?â
âI donât know. Did you run a business profile or dig up any information on them?â
âWhy would I?â
âYou followed her home. You know she went to these places. I thought you might have looked.â
âI didnât think anything of it.â
âMaybe you should have.â
Iâd forgotten how annoying Cross could be. âMaybe I should make this leave of absence permanent.â
âDonât say things like that,â Cross scolded. âI expect you back to work soon. I mean it.â
Tucking the phone away, I checked my reflection in the mirror, unlocked the door to the ladiesâ room, and returned to my room. By now, Will had woken up.
âWhere were you?â he asked.
âRunning errands.â
âI need to go home and get cleaned up.â
I checked the time, wondering when Mark would wrap things up. The DEA wouldnât invite me to the debrief, so Iâd have to wait until later to find out what Mark learned. âOkay,â I said, âIâll give you a ride.â
Will didnât live particularly close to the hotel. With traffic, it took about an hour to get to his house. When we arrived, his car was leaning to one side.
âWhat the fuck?â Will found the tires on the driverâs side slashed. Keyed into the door was one word. Killer.
I looked around, but I didnât see anyone. âThose assholes.â
He scratched the top of his head, fighting to keep his anger in check. âYeah.
