Chapter 6
I awakened Wednesday feeling like I'd gotten a good night's sleep. Rusty and I both did some deep stretches before heading out for a long morning run. The snow from yesterday morning had melted, so streets and sidewalks were dry, but the temperature had dropped to zero. I wore my fleece headband to keep my ears warm, but my nose ran faster than I did in the cold. Rusty thought cold temperatures were glorious, running with an ear-to-ear grin and his tongue flapping.
After a shower and breakfast, I checked my calendar, relieved to see that I had no appointments scheduled for the day. I needed to go through my notes and figure out what my next steps in the investigation should be. I began by typing my notes into a formal report, listing all details for each suspect as well as what I'd learned about Tyler. After re-reading the completed report, I still didn't have a sense of clarity about what to do next. This would be a good time to involve my neighbor Al.
Al Hill is a former homicide detective for the Denver Police Department. He was shot in the line of duty four years ago and has been confined to a wheelchair since that time. He's sixty-two, and his white hair and mustache against his dark chocolate complexion attest to having put in more than thirty years with the DPD. He lives with his son Tim and his family. I called him.
"Hello, Destiny." His voice was as gruff as his manner.
"Good morning, Al. I could use your help with a homicide case I'm working on. Any chance we could get together today?"
"I'll make the coffee. You bring your case notes and thumbtacks. See you in thirty." I heard the satisfaction in his voice. Al hated the feeling of being put out to pasture. The DPD had offered him an administrative position, but his passion was solving cases, not doing paperwork. He's highly skilled at picking out details that I might miss.
While my report printed, I searched the Internet for images so that I could print pictures of the victim and suspects. Al believed in creating a "murder board" with pictures and information about the case. I made a quick run to the local donut shop, threw my printouts and other supplies in my Wolf bag, and walked next door. I barely had time to knock before the door opened. Al rolled back from the door and said, "Case notes?" I handed them to him, and he put them on his lap. "Grab a couple of cups of coffee and meet me in the office."
I poured two mugs of coffee and found a tray that allowed me to carry the coffee and the donuts into the office across from the living room. Al had pushed the office chair aside and rolled himself behind the desk. The pictures were in a stack on one side of the desk, and he began skimming my report. "Clear the stuff off the corkboard and put up the pictures.
