Chapter Nine

“He's alive,” Patricia said in relief, feeling a strong pulse on Barney. He was lying on the sand trail like a dead man, wearing a frozen expression of fear on his face.

Hank tasted the dart Patricia had located. “Nothing on the dart. I think our friend just wet his pants and passed out.”

“Possible,” Patricia agreed, and then crawled over to Susie. The woman was also lying on the sand trail, moaning as her eyes struggled to open. “Susie, it's Patricia. Can you hear me?”

“The killer...” Susie moaned as a sudden gust of wind tore through the jungle brush. Patricia didn't mind the attack. The wind felt wonderful and smelled of fresh, salty ocean water.

“I know.” Patricia eased Susie's head onto her lap. “Juan, I need a bottle of water.”

Juan hurried to retrieve a bottle of water from one of the boxes sitting on the ground. He handed the bottle of water to Patricia with a shaky hand.

“It's okay, Juan,” Patricia promised as she opened the bottle of water and poured a little on Susie's face. Susie jerked and sputtered. “Here, poor some water on Barney.”

Juan hesitated. “The killer came out of the darkness. I did not hear him. I hear everything,” he told Patricia in a voice that sounded ashamed. “I know this island with my heart, every inch. If Kelly is killed, it will be my fault.”

“No, it's my fault for leaving.” Patricia sighed, looking at Barney.

Boy, what a night this is. I'm no Nancy Drew. Patricia's thoughts suddenly rushed back to a dark corn maze. Her eyes locked onto a lurking shadow creeping in through the tall stalks of corn. Patricia felt a horrible, agonizing fear scream in her heart as she ran. A deadly shadow burst out of the corn and gave chase, running Patricia down and tackling her to the ground. Patricia felt a pair of vicious hands wrap around her neck and strangle her, and then, just when death was imminent, a gunshot. The deadly shadow fell dead and Brian appeared holding a smoking gun.

Brian saved my life. I could have died in that corn maze, and now look at me, trapped in another murder case. One after another, and Brian isn't here. When will my ticket to ride the train to heaven arrive? This can't go on forever. Maybe I'll die on this island? Maybe I can kind of understand what Hank is feeling. But before I throw in the towel, I better give this case the good old college try.

“Young lady?” Hank asked Patricia, noticing the pained, scarred expression on her face. “Are you okay?”

“Huh?” Patricia asked, and then quickly shook the creepy corn maze away. “Uh, yeah, I guess.”

“The killer,” Susie sputtered, and finally opened her eyes.

“The killer was hiding in the darkness,” Maria insisted as she hugged Juan's arm. “Like a silent tiger, he attacked.”

“He? Are you sure the killer was a man?” Patricia asked, soothing Susie by rubbing her forehead.

“Yes, the killer was a man,” Juan confirmed. “He punched me in the belly and punched Kelly in the face, but first he shot Barney with a dart.
