CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Vikki sat opposite Levin in his office.

Captain Levin made a steeple with his fingers. “You’re telling me that Mr. Rinkin, the COO, was sleeping with the CEO’s wife?

“Yes, sir.”

“And he was there when the bomb went off?” He shook his head. “He’ll have a lot of explaining when his wife finds out.” He waved his hand dismissively. “That’s his problem. But there seems to be something else going on?”

“I think the bomb was planted by someone who wanted to send a warning and not necessarily kill.”

Levin’s gray eyes narrowed. “Explain.”

“The Boston Marathon bombers wanted mass casualty. In addition to the explosive material, they loaded the pot with nails, ball bearings—things that could maim. It was not so in this case.”

“I see what you mean. But at the end of the day, we have a homicide. We have to find out who put the bomb there. Keep me updated.”

That was the captain’s dismissal. Vikki left his office and went in search of Gomez.

“Mattsen! We’re in luck,” said Gomez as soon as he spotted Vikki. “The blue car is a rental. An Edward Brandon picked it up from Newark Liberty airport five days ago. Hasn’t been returned yet. I’ve put out a BOLO. Hopefully, something will bite sooner than later.”

At the mention of a bite, Vikki’s stomach rumbled. She looked at the wall clock. “It’s already five p.m. I’m famished. I’m going to grab something.”

“Where? The corner store? It doesn’t matter. I’ll come with you. I’ll tell Santiago to reach us if something comes in from the BOLO.”

There wasn’t a line at the corner store close to the police station. Vikki ordered a six-inch roast beef wrap with hot and sweet peppers, American cheese, lettuce, red onions, and tomatoes.

Gomez stared at Vikki’s order. His Adam apple bobbed up and down “Nice. I want the same.”

“Swap the beef for the chicken, and Serena will be extremely proud of you.”

“Make it one foot,” Gomez said.

Vikki laughed. “Now you’ve spoiled it. Are you trying to make her a widow?” She headed for an empty table. “Do you want to eat here? Or take it back to the office?”

Gomez smiled. “We have a free table. I want to eat in peace. We’ll enjoy our food and put it away quickly without distraction.”

Detective Santiago came up to Gomez and handed him a piece of paper once they entered the squad room. “This just came in. The blue Chevy was located in front of fifteen Speck Street. The property belongs to Mrs. Agnes Brocker, a seventy-year-old widow.”

A surge of adrenaline rushed through Vikki. “Did they make contact with the driver?”

Santiago shook her head. “They were told not to engage.”

“Good,” Vikki said. “Ask them to remain unseen and follow if the car moves. We’ll be there soon. We don’t want to spook him.” She smiled. “Thank you, Maria.”

“Don’t mention it.” Maria looked around and said in a low voice, “McClane gets uptight whenever I mention you or say I’m doing something for you. Is there something I should know?”

Vikki laughed.
