It took some time to assemble all the rebels, a task made all the more complicated by their lack of discipline. Beverly had intended to have them form up by companies, but in the end, they gathered into one large mass of people, standing around waiting.
"I am Princess Bronwyn, of the Royal House of King Halfan," the princess announced. The crowd grew quiet at the mention of their late king. Bronwyn hesitated, and Beverly could see sweat breaking out on the brow of the princess.
"I have come here today to give you hope," the princess continued. "Hope that you will someday regain that which you have lost."
The crowd stared at her expectantly.
"I know you have suffered, as have we all." Bronwyn winced, noticing she was losing them as they started to turn away. "But I give you my word I shall not rest until Lord Hollis and his cronies have been driven from the field, and the true bloodline of Norland restored to its rightful place on the throne."
She took a breath, then plunged onward. "Come with me, and together we shall defeat this menace to the great land we call home. Let us march into Norland and reclaim that which is rightfully ours!"
The rebels let out a cheer that appeared to please the young woman. She held her fist in the air. "To victory!" she shouted.
"To victory," they echoed, though to Beverly's ears, they were not overly enthusiastic.
Bronwyn turned her horse around, riding over to where Beverly sat astride Lightning.
"Make me an army," she commanded. "An army the likes of which has never been seen before."
"They are but few in number," warned Beverly.
"Yes, but their numbers will grow as we deliver defeat to our enemies. Do this for me, Dame Beverly, and when the crown is mine, I shall see to it that you are richly rewarded."
The knight looked drawn in by the intense gaze. "I shall do all I can, Your Highness. I promise."
