Chapter 20

“What the hell was that?” Clara cried out, growing paler by the second as I led her up the driveway. Grey clouds rolled in from the coast.

“What?” I asked.

She was running on adrenaline, but once it wore off, the memories of what he did to her would come flooding back. I couldn’t bear the thought of the suffering it was sure to cause her.

I hugged her a little closer, almost lifting her off the ground.

“Ju-Just put me down. I am not an invalid.” She pulled away, eyes wide and unsettled. “But you—you’re something else. One moment you were on your arse in agony and then . . . And you were so fast . . . But the look in your eyes near the end—it scared me.”

“I wasn’t that fast. Those goons were on drugs.” I gathered all the calmness I could muster. “They’ve slow reflexes, that’s all.”

“There was nothing wrong with their reflexes. You say you’ve no magic, so how’d you go all superpowered Bruce Lee on their asses?” Her pace slowed as she caught her breath before she continued. “Like watching Enter the Dragon and Game of Death combined. Those bozos fought like Jackie Chan in Drunken Master. Even so, they didn’t stand a chance.”

Lost for words, I stared straight ahead, pulling Clara onwards. The tree-lined driveway was long and winding, rising steeply, testing our remaining stamina. Clara was huffing, trying to match my pace. The memory of what had happened replayed in my mind in all its Technicolor bizarreness.

I recalled speeding forward, empowered by an absolute certainty I would know what to do and when to do it. Everyone around me slowed right down like they were moving underwater. Disorienting at first, I misjudged my footing, skidding straight into Curly. He hit me once in my diaphragm, hard, while I gasped for air. He let go of Clara and tossed me to the floor.

She reached out to me, but Moe swiftly moved in and grabbed her, pinning her arms tight behind her back. Her face scrunched up as she wriggled to get free. I rolled to my right, narrowly missing Larry’s bobber boot stomping my face.

Curly was outside my field of view, so I pulled myself onto my knees and contracted into a ball before tucking into a forward roll. Using my hands to stop myself, I donkey-kicked Curly as he approached. I scrambled to my feet and whirled around, ready for the next assault.

Larry stepped back, giving a now-limping Curly room to move. Curly lunged forward, ready to maul me like a ferocious grizzly bear protecting his territory. I snapped a kick deep into his tubby gut, briefly winding him. Undeterred, he lunged at me once more.

I leaned away, trapping his lead arm with one hand while flying a backfist into his throat. He reeled, spluttering, hands covering his shattered hyoid. I shot forward, throwing everything I had into a short sharp punch deep into his solar plexus.

He staggered backward, raking the air between us
