July, 1664

Eliza travelled back to Moonfell on the seat of the carriage with Jem, rather than in the carriage itself, talking about their meeting with Nell and Villiers.

She was hopeful and fearful all at the same time, curious as to what gossip abounded about Moonfell, and how much was rumour opposed to truth. All of it, probably. At least she hoped so. She gazed upon Moonfell’s walls with gratitude. Home. Safety.

Or it had been, until now.

Thick strands of ivy wound about the wrought iron gates that were rarely locked, shifting and writhing as if they were infested with rats. Perhaps they were.

“’sblood!” Jem said, swearing. “This is a fiddle-faddle. We’ll never get through that.”

“Yes, we will!” Eliza stood on the seat, shoulders thrown back, glad the road their entrance was on was a distance from the village and that no one was around. She was so annoyed that she ceased to care what Jem would think, and blasted it with fire balls, one after another, her fury growing as the writhing mass seemed to just shake them off.

“Save your magic!” Jem laid a hand on her arm. “You know that won’t work.”

“It made me feel better.”

“Really? Because you look furious.”

She turned on him. “This is our home, and look at it now! That damnable creature has made it a nightmare!”

He reached for an axe under the seat. “We came prepared, remember? Summon Ansel like you agreed.”

Sulkily, she said, “I doubt the axe will work, either.”

“It might now that you’ve imbued it with magic.” He tutted. “Come on, Eliza. You could well have another meeting with Villiers in a few days, and need to save your sister. Those should be motivation enough.”

Jacinta. Eliza imagined her cavorting in that horrible way in the garden, covered in earth and moss, like a half-rotted doll. She extended her hand into the air and shot sparks high over the wall. Ansel should be watching from the highest tower for her signal. Perhaps he and the mysterious Hades would have a solution.

“What do you think of Hades?” she asked Jem, watching him shrug off his coat and loosen his shirt before swinging his axe to limber up.

“I don’t know what to think. He seems as unnerving as the elemental. Are you sure we can trust him?”

“No, but he helped earlier. He picked the creature up!” The memory of the elemental creature landing in the pond was still fresh in her mind. It had brought them enough time to race to the stables and secure the horse, and then she had placed a myriad of protection spells around it. “I think I may bring Hercules into the house tonight and take him into the inner courtyard. I’m not leaving him in the stables. Not now. He’ll be terrified.” He was already shuffling nervously and pawing at the ground. “Maybe I should have brought the cows in, too. What if the growth that has accelerated the garden does the same to them?”

“Then it would do the same to all the other animals too, and there’s no evidence of that.
