Chapter Eleven
The bloody pillowcase on my front doorstep had me shaken. So shaken, that Christy and I decided we had better stop by Amandaâs for some coffee before going to work.
âItâs still fall. Can I get a pumpkin spice latte?â I asked Amanda as I leaned on her front counter.
Her brow furrowed. âMia, are you okay?â
I nodded. âSure. Why do you ask?â
She glanced at Christy. âYou both look like somethingâs going on. Did you get enough sleep last night? You look pale.â
âOh, we got enough sleep all right,â Christy said, coming to lean on the counter beside me. âCan I get a pumpkin spice latte? Two shots of espresso?â
âBetter make mine three shots,â I said, not taking my eyes off of Amanda.
âOkaaay,â she said, drawing the word out. âTwo pumpkin spice lattes, one with two shots and one with three of espresso. Are you sure you two are all right?â
âCan you add extra sweetener to mine also?â I asked. âIâm a fan of sweet coffee, and adding those extra shots of espresso is going to demand extra sweetener.â
âIâd like extra sweetener added to mine, too,â Christy said.
Amanda nodded. âAre you two going to tell me whatâs going on?â she asked as she got to work on our coffee.
I glanced at the customers sitting at tables in the coffee shop. They all seemed to be absorbed in their own conversations or their eyes were glued to the phones in front of them. I turned back to Amanda. âWhen I opened my front door, there was a pillowcase with candy in it on the step.â
Amandaâs eyes went wide, and she nodded. âWell, that was nice. Somebody was bringing you candy since you didnât get a chance to trick or treat?â She grinned and kept working on my coffee.
I shook my head. âYou donât understand. There was blood on the pillowcase.â
Her mouth dropped open. âAre you serious?â
I nodded and glanced around again to make sure nobody was listening, and then I leaned further over the counter. âI would not kid about something like that. Iâm just a little freaked out by it.â
âI donât blame you. What did Ethan say?â
âHe took it to the station, and heâs going to send it to the lab.â
She shook her head. âThat takes a lot of gall, leaving something like that on a police detectiveâs front step. Nobody has cameras in the neighborhood?â
âA neighbor across the street does, but the camera only got a glimpse of whoever it was, and you canât see anything clearly.â
âIâm freaked out because I saw the bag, and because it was left on my sisterâs doorstep,â Christy added.
âI donât blame you,â Amanda said as she added the shots of espresso to the cup. She put the lid on it and set it on the counter. âNo charge today, girls. You both need this.â She got to work on Christyâs coffee.
âI canât tell you how much I appreciate that,â I said, glancing over my shoulder as the front door opened. It was Nolan Frakes. I forced myself to smile at him.
