Chapter Twenty
A lucky escape
It is an accepted fact that the recorded history of Terrathia only spans the last three generations. We are aware that previous civilisations existed on our lands, the architectural evidence litters our countryside. Many scholars argue that the structure of the ruins suggest that at least one of those civilisations was highly advanced, beyond our current understanding. Some of the skeletal sub-structures that protrude from the Swamp of Eila, the Portia Forest and even below the Inland Sea are hundreds of strides tall and constructed from compounds that we cannot identify.
Unfortunately, further archaeological investigations cannot take place without the endorsement of the Terrathian Prime, which currently is not forthcoming.
Excerpt from a letter to the Council of the Terrathian Prime from the Under-Secretary of the Orionness Archaeological Society
Maud was ecstatic as they travelled northeast across Senna Lake, heading for the Eastborne River, where they would exchange the barges for a more robust vessel with a deeper hull to navigate the Inland Sea.
âDid you see how those fools focused on the Reapers and not on the river? What sort of Peacekeeper Captain is so easily fooled?â She patted Arwa on the back forcefully. âWe managed to get through their trap for the price of a few Reapers and that constant complainer Carl. Win, win I would say. Although, he was good with a bow, Iâll give him that.â
Ahead lay the start of the Eastborne River that flowed five hundred miles north and south joining Senna Lake to the Inland Sea. The Inland Sea was an enormous saltwater lake that connected to the Calla Sea in the east via underground tunnels believed to have been created millennia ago by volcanic activity across the Acacius Mountain range on Stragarâs western border.
It was a perfect transit point for smugglers and other such nefarious people as it lay across the borders of three kingdoms: the northeast corner of Veragon, the north corner of Keziah and most of the southern border of Yrythia. This meant that people could disappear without a trace, which is exactly what Maud was hoping to do. She had been given strict instructions by her employer not to divulge the destination of the kidnapped teens, and he was powerful enough to make her life very difficult or very short if she was foolish enough to disobey.
At the mouth of the Eastborne River was a large dock, where travellers could eat and rest or, if travelling on, could transfer into a river boat that would safely get them where they wanted to go. There was an infamous tavern built on the wharf of the dock, where, once the ships were unloaded, tired sailors could find whatever type of relaxation they required.
âBe mindful of the tavern owner,â said Maud stepping from the barge. âHeâs a rather repugnant character with a taste for younger women.â
âSounds lovely,â replied Arwa. âIâm sure he has a winning personality.â
âDonât be so flippant,â snapped Maud abruptly. âNot everyone who enters the Dragonâs Curse manages to leave, or at least not under their own power, maybe in a wooden box or freel sack sometime after dark.
