Draylok

Kealin awoke, sitting up without so much of a delay as Nonro bit at a strange floating bug teasing him on the balcony. The bug hit him on the head and then flew up to a high point in the room, well out of the reach of any normal annoying dog.

“Nonro, unless you’re going to learn to fly, you’re going to have trouble getting that.”

Nonro barked, creating a blast of fire that whipped up, hitting the bug just enough to knock it down. Nonro ran over, tail wagging, and grabbed the bug, eating it with a good crunch as he chewed it.

“Or not.” Kealin laughed.

He slipped on his boots and stretched, thinking of their journey ahead. He thought, too, of what Mikar had said and of Eschal. He wondered of what kind of mood the vampire would be in.

It was a good question.

As he and Nonro made their way to the courtyard, they spotted Eschal writing. Kealin made a point to avoid the area for now, planning to make the excuse that he just wanted to walk outside the castle, when instead, Eschal called him over.

“Kealin, I’ve been waiting. I’m glad you’re awake.”

Kealin nodded. “I was going to go for a short walk before—”

“Before we walk more? There are no really easy vampire doors. While we’ll be able to get close, Draylok will still be a bit of a walk. But no, come here. I know before you rested things were a bit . . . odd between us. I wanted to let you know that eventually, sleep will not be a necessity as long as you feed as you were taught last night.”

“Well, that’ll be different.”

“It is peaceful,” Eschal said, rubbing his chin. “It is in the quiet moments that reflection shows us the truths we may ignore in the normal wakeful moments. A practice of deep meditation can help this, of course. But . . .” He lifted something he had sitting on the ground next to him. It was covered with a black cloth. He set it in his lap.

“Kealin, when we both departed, I did not tell you the full truth of what actions I was taking. While you were going to purify Vearika’s temple, I had intent, and with that intent, I intended to test myself. I returned to Mandurlaku, seeking something of yours. When I found it, I found that it had already been found by the enemy.”

“That’s where you went? Why would you go there?”

“Your blade, the Urlas blade, it has developed powers. I could not allow the other to be found by the enemy. I’ve also found that the blade you gave me to study has an aspect of a soul bound to it.”

“My sister?”

Eschal nodded. “I noticed it when I was first tending to the gardener spider and I asked to study your blade. All substances, you see, have memory. It’s the difficulty different substances have in accessing the memory that is the trick. In my case, I knew I needed to get your other blade.
