Chapter Fourteen

Tatia

The ride in the truck started out a little bumpy, but now we were on the main highway. Both windows were cracked, and I was more than a little relieved to feel the crisp air against my skin. I was free. Finally.

I felt Treyton’s gaze on me as he navigated the long, winding highway. If what they said about shifters were true, then there was a good chance that he already knew I was holding something back.

“I’m grateful that I met you that night,” I said.

“So am I.”

“I haven’t moved in a while, so I didn’t know it’d be this tough getting used to a town. I thought because it was so small that it would have all these issues.”

“We’ve got more issues than Sports Illustrated, ginger cat,” he joked.

I didn’t do nicknames, but I loved the way he said it. Actually, it was much better than someone referred to me as ‘that red-head’.

“I was hired and everything.” I looked down at my hands. “Then those guys rushed inside and demanded money from the owner…what’s his name…Mr. Abrams.”

Treyton slowed up a bit. “Is that so…?”

I glanced at him. “You know him or something?”

“Not really. We’ve exchanged few words but I’m sure he knows about me. Donnie’s a popular eating and hook-up spot.”

“Hook-up spot?”

“I was giving my friend a ride. Waiting for free food, remember?”

I chuckled. “Yeah, I remember. Not that I was trying to question your right to hooking up with anyone.”

He cleared his throat. “If you don’t mind, can you tell me more about what happened when the guys demanded money from Abrams.”

“Well, we were just finishing up when he went to go grab something. I was waiting a while, but I didn’t hear anything out of the ordinary. I thought the increase in noise was standard for a place like that. I got impatient, so I stuck my head out and there were some men holding Mr. Abrams against a wall. It looked like a robbery to me.”

Treyton nodded. “My sources do say that Mr. Abrams was robbed that night. Unfortunately, I didn’t make the connection with your disappearance until I had someone review your check-in records at the Inn.”

“You mean, no one else suspected I was missing at the Inn?”

He shook his head. “No. You’re paid up, it seems. Only way they bother you is if you owe money apparently.”

“I’m actually paid up a good month. I guess I won’t be getting a refund or anything.”

“How did you come across the rogues?”

“They rushed into Mr. Abrams office before I could run. It sounded like they were going to keep me hostage or something but then Mr. Abrams agreed to open the safe if they let me go. I ran after that. I made it outside and was just about to call the police when the men jumped me. Why do you call them rogues?”

“Rogue shifters. Those who’ve gone against common law for all shifters. They’ve been creating problems for many of us. Their actions cause the humans not to trust us.
